Mackay is located 803
kilometres north by air from Queensland’s capital city of Brisbane.
Mackay's close proximity to the Great
Barrier Reef and some of the world's most prized island getaways makes
it a preferred holiday destination for many thousands of visitors each
year.
The Mackay region has an estimated
population of more than 124,309 permanent residents and, of this number,
more than half (74,122) live within the Mackay City Council precinct.

The Mackay region includes the
local government authorities of Mackay City Council; the Sarina
Shire Council in the south; the Bowen and Whitsunday Shire
Councils in the north; and the shires of Mirani, Belyando, Nebo
and Broadsound in the west.
The region includes more than 70
islands and a large portion of the Great Barrier Reef. Covering a
land area of 90,119 square kilometres the region’s land area
accounts for 5.2 per cent of the total area of Queensland.

young compared to state average, it boasts plentiful opportunities for
sport and recreation.
Mackay serves as the hub for some of
the largest mines in Qld and has a thriving sugar industry.
Tourism is now a major push for the
region as it boasts some of the finest beaches and island
resorts within its district.
