Now a good number of guests that arrive on the Great Barrier Reef or at holiday resorts the world over, have already had one or more dives but never bothered to become a certified scuba diver.

Many of them feel that doing a dive course will use up most of their time or take time away from the family with studying and training.  Some feel that it’s never the right time to become a certified scuba diver as they feel it just takes too long.  Others may complain about the price and or how one dive is all they’re here for yet, they almost always do an extra dive after the first scuba underwater experience.

The truth is that their simply just making excuses - and they could be exploring some of the most amazing destinations underwater.

As the saying goes, “it’s better to jump in the pool rather than just stick your feet in.”

My personal opionion after being one of those folks I now say most certainly "jump right in and do it. It’s "far more costly to be paying for a one time dive experience that will just repeat itself on the next vacation because one dive it just never enough!

And getting your full dive certification takes just a few days and it is a great family bonding experience for when you all go on holidays together.

We have parents and their children taking introductory and certified scuba diving courses together each month at my current resort.  Sometimes mum or dad have already completed their certification and join their son or daughter for fun dives on the reef while they do their course.  It’s great seeing a father and mother so proud of their child as he or she make it look so easy.

Even newlyweds, who visit the Great Barrier Reef on their honeymoon, get certified together sharing a new found passion.  What better way to strengthen ones marriage and build a stronger bond than scuba diving!

For most, to become a certified open water diver, takes about three days after a few days of classroom on theory or hitting the books online.  However, some take longer, not with the theory, but with getting comfortable in the open water out in the ocean itself.

Normally, with swimmers, confined and open water training sessions come quite easy.  Now for the brave souls, who can’t swim, but decided they wish to do a certified scuba diving course, this make take just a little bit more time.

A good dive instructor, like myself, will have no problem taking a non-swimmer and first teach them how to be comfortable in water followed by swimming lessons.

You would be surprised at just how many people from around the world, who can’t swim, want to try scuba diving.  A lot! But that’s no problem for us dive professionals. It’s what we are trained to do.  And as I’ve mentioned, one dive is never enough.

Book a Liveaboard Scuba Dive Trip on the Great Barrier Reef

So for those who have become certified divers, that’s when the real fun begins. Now what I mean by that is the chance to venture off looking for that next thrill!

After I first got my certified divers ticket, I come across a group of divers from New York who kept going on and on about their liveaboard dive experience they just had.

For me, I had no idea what that was as I had just completed my course. So naturally I inquired as to what a liveaboard was with them.  It was explained to me that liveaboard dive trips are for certified divers where you can sleep, eat, and dive by boat all day long and even do night dives at various places throughout the world.

On some boats introductory divers and snorkelers can also book a liveaboard trip on the Great Barrier Reef.  The idea of sleeping on a boat, waking up to dive, having breakfast, and then diving again followed by lunch and then another dive was like sweet music to my ears! This was something I had to do on my next vacation.  Once I did it I was hooked on diving for life!

Just a tip from Robbie: Not all liveaboard dive trips are equal!

You can book cheaper dive trips and have shared bunk accommodation and have an absolute blast, you can go to the top level of luxury liveaboard dive boats, or even book a special expedition style dive trip to swim with Dwarf Minke Whales or if you are really keen book a dive trip specifically to dive with predatory sharks.

There are many types of liveaboard dive trips to choose from and the fun is trying them all one by one.
