About Maryborough

Home to one of Australia’s busiest ports in the 1800s and the birthplace of Mary Poppins’ author P L Travers, Maryborough has plenty of chapters in its colourful story.

So rich is Maryborough in history, you could be forgiven for believing it has been sprinkled with just a spoonful of sugar. It was here the world’s most famous nanny, Mary Poppins, was conceived through the eyes of author P L Travers who was born in the bank building where her father worked in 1899. So revered is this story, that each winter the town celebrates by transforming its streets into Cherry Tree Lane from the novel.
