Canyoning is an adventure activity that has grown in popularity around the world and is known by many names.
In South Africa it’s called ‘kloofing’, in the United States it’s ‘canyoneering’, in Italy it’s ‘torrenismo’, in Wales it’s ‘cerdded ceunant’, and in Japan and Taiwan it is called ‘river tracing’.
Whichever country you’re in, the canyoning basics are the same - to start at point ‘A’ and work your way through the canyon to get to point ‘B’.
It's an obstacle course made by nature!
Behana Gorge is ideal for canyoning as the water from the rainforest has carved its way in the bedrock stone over thousands of years to create a narrow gorge with numerous drops, sculpted walls and some spectacular waterfalls.
This World Heritage listed area boasts the most extensive wet sandstone canyoning system on earth.
On arrival at Behana Gorge you will be briefed on the day’s activities and given your safety equipment.
Then get set to jump, slide, swim and climb your way through the gorge!
Rappeling or abseiling is a technique used when a cliff or slope is too steep or dangerous to navigate without the use of ropes. A professional abseiling instructor will brief you in the method. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to pick up, and will find yourself scaling down the steep drop offs like a pro in no time.
One way to make your way down the Behana Gorge over larger rocks and cliffs is to just jump off them! Launch yourself off in an exhilarating leap as you plunge feet first into the clear crystal waters below. The jumps are tried and tested and perfectly safe, and if they are too high you can rappel down.
The waterfalls in this area have been widely photographed for their scenic beauty and appear in many commercials (Herbal Essences, XXX Beer) and music videos (Peter Andre – Mysterious Girl video). You’ll feel like you’re in a picture postcard, or indeed a commercial, as you swim under these scenic waterfalls.
The large smooth granite boulders that line the Behana Gorge make for the perfect natural slide. Wheeeeee! So much fun as you build up momentum and then splash into the clear waters below.
During your one-hour lunch break you can enjoy a snorkel in one of the many glorious waterholes at Behana Gorge. The water is so clear you won't even need a snorkel mask to spot the many fish, eels and yabbies (a freshwater crustacean that is like a crayfish) to be found here.
The lush rainforest around Behana Gorge belongs to the oldest rainforest in the world. As you trek under leaves the size of umbrellas branching from ancient ferns, it’s hard not to imagine a dinosaur popping its head out of the leaves. Trailing fig tendrils and the burbling of rainforest creeks will bring out the inner Jane or Tarzan in you.
Midway through the day you will stop to rest and eat by a beautiful scenic waterhole.
You’ll enjoy delicious mixed sandwiches which cater for all tastes and dietary requirements.
Your lunch break lasts one hour and you can choose how you wish to spend it.
Laze under the tropical sun and soak up the beauty of the rainforest.
Jump into a natural waterhole and snorkel and swim in the crystal clear waters.
Search for yabbies or just cool down in this natural paradise.
