About Your Outback Queensland Sheep Station Hosts

Evanston Station is a privately owned and family run sheep and wool station running approximately 10,000 merino wool producing sheep here however with lambs that are “unmarked” at certain times of the year it would be around 13,000 sheep.

John or “Tub” as he is affectionately known and Maree own and operate the sheep station with seasonal contractors for shearing and crutching.

John is also a pilot and for mustering he flies ar Cessna 172 whilst others are on the ground on motor bikes and four wheeler quad bikes.

When the seasons return to normal and there is good grass they run up to 17,000 sheep but as a general rule they like to run around 15,000 sheep.

They have 46,000 acres to graze the sheep and produce high quality ethically produced wool.

John is the 5th generation of John Campbell Macmillan and he is the third generation to be truly passionate about producing wool.

Maree and John are passionate about their sheep, their property and the Australian wool industry.

John has lived on Evanston Station mostly for all of his life and Maree was born in Victoria and moved to Longreach and married John over 20 years ago.

They have four children, two currently at university and two in boarding school.

They both enjoy showcasing their station and explaining it’s day to day operations and discussing the local district and showing those who are interested around the station and/or the district.

They embrace other peoples’ questions and curiosity and at the end of a day very much look forward to a relaxing drink, wonderful conversation and good food.

Maree has a passion for quality food and produce, preparing and serving their own lamb and loves to entertain and welcome people to their station.

Together John and Maree would like to highlight to guests that the Queensland outback is full of history, stories, hard working men and women, droughts and flooding rains and that people are welcoming and very proud to showcase their part of outback Queensland, and Australia to visitors from the world over.

Shown to station accommodation

Enjoy lunch either in the garden or on front verandah

*            During lunch have an informative talk on Evanston Station with John (Tub) and Maree about its history and the local area around Ilfracombe and Longreach

*            Afternoon property points of interest tour taking in wool shed and sheep yards, mobs of sheep in paddocks and general driving around

*            Late afternoon around 5pm drive to Sunset Bore for sunset drinks at Turkeys Nest with selected alcoholic (beer/wine/champagne) and a non alcoholic spritzer with a gourmet cheeseboard

The Sunset Bore site is located at a turkeys nest some 10kms from the homestead which is a raised dam as such that acts as a cooling pond for water that is pumped from the great artesian bore by a large mill and pump.

We have earth formed level ground around the nest with some chairs and a table and it is magnificent for sunset photographs and end of day viewing as it puts the station’s location into perspective as you can see for miles from the elevated location.

*            Return to station accommodation to refresh

*            7pm evening meal at homestead with John and Maree.  A two 2 course meal with selected wines at dinner.   All meals prepared, provided and presented by John and Maree.

Maree has a Cert III in Hospitality and an RSA Certificate.

Depending on weather/seasonal conditions and time of year – dinner would be either inside or outside.  Winter months  (June-August would see the garden ringers camp fire burning brightly and dinner could be fireside)

*            Retire for evening
