  • Cruise an ancient crater lake
  • Marvel at the 500-year-old Cathedral Fig Tree
  • Trek through World Heritage-listed rainforests
  • Spot the elusive platypus and an array of native wildlife

Experience the breathtaking beauty of the Cairns Atherton Tablelands rainforest and ancient crater lakes on this full day walking adventure.

The Atherton Tablelands are behind the Macalister Ranges west of Cairns and this is the region where you will find lush green rolling hills, ancient volcanic craters, magnificent waterfalls, rare native Australian wildlife and dense rainforests.

You’ll begin your hiking tour in an ancient rainforest national park, where you’ll trek to a sun-speckled boardwalk under a treetop canopy.

Here you’ll find the famed Cathedral Fig Tree – a towering 500-year-old fig with an internal cathedral formation you can explore.

Learn about the history of the forest and the animals that inhabit it from your knowledgeable guide whilst trekking through the lush rainforest.

It’s then time to venture on the crystal waters of Lake Barrine to indulge in a sumptuous morning tea, and hear how this beautiful lake is in fact a 10,000-year-old volcano crater.

Enjoy an hour-long cruise of discovery before a mouthwatering seafood lunch and some platypus spotting.

In the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a scenic walk to the Millaa Millaa lookout with the option to take a refreshing dip in Lake Eacham another ancient volcanic crater lake.

On our walking tours you will encounter a large range of bird life, butterflies in all ranges of magnificent colours and other native Australian animals.

Atherton Tablelands Rainforest and Crater Lakes

Embark on a truly magical journey of discovery through the Cairns Atherton Tablelands Rainforest.

Your knowledgeable, local rainforest guide, James, is an ambassador for Tropical Far North Queensland and an accredited Wet Tropics tour guide.

You’ll discover some of the most breathtaking flora and fauna on the planet and learn some fascinating historical facts on these personalised small group Cairns hiking tours.

Boardwalk to the Cathedral Tree

Inside the evergreen labyrinth of the ancient Wet Tropics rainforest, you’ll uncover the famed Cathedral Tree.

You’ll be led there, off the beaten path, through sun-dappled boardwalks under a treetop canopy.

In amongst the palms and ferns, this majestic strangler fig appears as king of the forest with its sheer size and intricate formation.

Explore the tree's cathedral-shaped interior and the astonishing root system that resembles an undulating curtain.

Lake Barrine Volcano Crater Cruise

Hidden inside the World Heritage-listed rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands, there lies a lake of natural beauty awaiting your discovery.

Lake Barrine is a sapphire jewel of Far North Queensland and a feature attraction on this walking tour.

The lake is in fact a volcanic crater, estimated at 12,000 years old.

You'll cruise the calm waters with the chance of wildlife encounters, such as amethystine pythons which can sometimes be seen on the embankments.

And in the waterways, treasures such as the saw-shelled turtle can frequently be spotted in the shallows, as well as Boyd’s Water Dragon - a colourful little fellow found only in the Wet Tropics of Australia.

Millaa Millaa and the Atherton Tablelands

One of the most picturesque panoramas on this tour, encompassing lush valleys and blankets of tropical rainforest, is the Millaa Millaa Lookout.

Within the ‘Misty Mountains’, this plateau is elevated 1,070m above sea level and captures views of the ocean near Innisfail and icons such as the Seven Sisters and Lamb Ranges.

It is situated in the Atherton Tablelands - an inland paradise of rolling hills and breathtaking national parks, where cooler climes and low humidity make for pristine trekking conditions.

Located in this area are the famous Millaa Millaa falls, which feature as a stunning backdrop in a number of Australian television commercials.

Swimming at Lake Eacham Volcano Crrater

After a mouthwatering seafood lunch, a tranquil cruise, and some magical scenery, you’ll spend the next part of the tour on the shores of Lake Eacham.

This clear turquoise lake is surrounded by pristine rainforest, and is home to some of the world’s rarest wildlife.

Your hiking guide will take you on a thrilling journey of platypus spotting (a cousin to the echidna), and you'll have the opportunity to take a dip in the cool waters.

Though separate to Lake Barrine, this stunning water system is likewise a volcanic crater, (a Maar) and estimated to have formed 12,000 years ago.

Choose to walk on the shoreline, float upon the calm surface, or simply sit and listen to the echo of songbirds calling through the jungle.
