You’ll wander through the ‘History and Heroes’ exhibition, a homage to Indigenous heroes past; play the didgeridoo; witness hunting demonstrations; and learn about the medicinal qualities of bush tucker.

You’ll head towards the city to marvel at the world’s largest themed stained glass windows, depicting the story of creation, in St. Monica’s Cathedral. Freshly-baked scones with jam and cream are next, before wandering through lush botanic gardens and heading to one of Cairns’ best vantage points.

End the afternoon with a drive to Palm Cove. Soak in the sunset as you stroll down the jetty before heading back to your accommodation.

This tour is designed to appeal to travellers of all ages and interests.

Transfer to Tjapukai

Your pick-up time for the transfer to Tjapukai will depend on where you’re staying in Cairns.

For those staying in the city, pick-ups will start at 8.15am.  If you are staying in accommodation at Cairns’ Northern Beaches, you will be picked up from 9.00am.

Explore the World’s Oldest Living Culture

Once at Tjapukai you’ll have the rest of the morning to explore. Rich with interactive experiences, prepare to be transported back 40,000 years as you gain a deeper understanding of the world’s oldest living culture.

Learn about the significance of the Aboriginal understanding of the world and its creation, known at the Dreamtime. Gain an insight into the lasting impacts of the stolen generation and the differences between the Aboriginal clans. Appreciate the complex techniques involved in playing a didgeridoo, throwing a returning boomerang and a spear.

You’ll witness Indigenous performers bring their culture to life through traditional dance. And you’ll discover the medicinal qualities of bush tucker and learn about the traditional gathering and cooking of bush foods.

On to Discover Cairns

Between 12 midday to 12.15pm your Cairns Discovery Tour guide will meet you at the Tjapukai entrance where you will hop aboard the shuttle that will act as your base for the afternoon.

Remember that lunch isn’t included in the package, so if you’re feeling peckish, even after the bush tucker tasting, be sure to grab a bite to eat.

The Rich History of Cairns

You’ll head straight to St Monica’s Cathedral. While unassuming from the outside, its elegant interior, rich with history, will impress. Among its other showcases of beautiful craftsmanship throughout the cathedral, the star of the show is the world’s largest themed stained glass windows. The series of 24 windows, known as the ‘Creation Windows’, depict the creation story by the Book of Genesis, with a local Australian slant. You certainly don’t need a religious affiliation to appreciate this artwork.

Scones and Strolls

Next stop is a spot of afternoon tea of freshly-baked scones, jam and locally-grown coffee, tea or hot chocolate at a café in The Cairns Botanic Gardens. Highly regarded for its lush display of tropical plants across its 38 hectares, some of which are particularly unique to Tropical North Queensland, the gardens are divided into five areas. The Flecker Botanic Gardens is one of these. As you stroll in the shade under the rainforest canopy your guide will explain the range of plants and wildlife along the way.

On to Scenic Lookouts and Sandy Sunsets

Your guide will then take you to one of Cairns’ top lookouts, the Copperlode Dam Lookout, where you’ll enjoy uninterrupted scenic views. From there you’ll be taken to the lower section of the Barron Gorge National Park to take in the spectacle of Surprise Creek Falls.

Then it’s on to the final spot for the afternoon; laid-back Palm Cove. Named after the palm trees that line the beach, Palm Cove has mix of sophisticated restaurants, casual cafes, bars, boutiques, and resorts. Take in the sunset with the sand between your toes, or stroll down the jetty before your return transfer to your accommodation.
