  • Take advantage of the many talks and presentations that are on throughout the day. You’ll learn far more about the dome’s inhabitants than you would exploring on your own.
  • Jo Jo the cockatoo is a huge character in the park. You’ll most likely hear him when you enter as he screeches a big, “Hello!” He also likes a boogie, so if you want to help him along, play his favourite song from your phone, ‘I like to move it’ from the movie Madagascar, and he’ll start to dance!

Located in the heart of the city, atop The Reef Hotel Casino, is an all-weather wildlife park encased in a 20-metre-high glass dome. Enter, and you’ll be immersed in a rainforest environment. Look up, and you’ll see it’s a wildlife sanctuary with a twist; above is a challenge ropes course of zip lines, tunnels, cargo nets and swings, so you can combine your animal encounters with adrenalin-pumping action.

Home to more than 60 species of animals – including cuddly koalas, cheeky lorikeets, kookaburras, green tree frogs, and a 4.1 metre crocodile known as Goliath – wonder around the park at your leisure. Or drop in on the many fun and informative presentations held throughout the day.

Start your day with the morning feed of the rainforest birds; attend the koala talk to learn about these much-loved marsupials; or discover what makes a crocodile tick at the reptile show. All shows are included in your entry fee.

And remember to have your photo taken with a koala, python or crocodile as a souvenir of the day. Or if you’re brave enough, flash a cheeky grin while zip lining above Goliath!

Wildlife Dome

Immerse yourself in a rainforest environment in the heart of Cairns city. Meet Snowy, the rare white kookaburra; Jo Jo, the sulphur-crested cockatoo; and Goliath the 4.1m estuarine crocodile. Mingle with the inquisitive, free-roaming rainforest wallabies and native birds.

Surrounded my more than 60 species of animals including amphibians, reptiles, mammals and marsupials, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to learn more about the dome’s inhabitants through a series of shows and presentations.

Remember to have your photo taken with a koala. Look out for the designated photography area next to the reception.

Koala photos are taken on the half hour from 9:30am to 6:30pm. Anyone can hold a koala as long as they are over 120cm tall and follow the wildlife keeper’s instructions. Snake and crocodile photos are taken on the hour between 9.30am to 4:30pm.

Soar Above the Action

As the only wildlife park in the world featuring a challenge ropes course you can be sure this experience will be one of a kind. And there is plenty of action to choose from, depending on your comfort level.

No prior experience is necessary for any of the activities but you may choose to start out with the Mid-ZOOM. And if you fancy yourself a bit of a fitness buff, go for your life and head straight for the Hi-ZOOM. There’s also the option of braving the external perimeter of the dome. You’ll be rewarded with stunning outlooks from the Trinity Inlet right out to the northern beaches.

For those who are a little wary of jumping straight into the Hi-ZOOM challenge, the Mid-ZOOM could be the introduction for you. The course runs 3m above ground level and while it’s slightly easier, it still requires strength and balance and comes with a range of elements that’ll test you, but it’s a great way of familiarising yourself with the different elements. You can expect tunnels, wall-climbs, a cargo net, swings, and a zip line.

The Mid-Zoom is also recommended for younger kids.

For those daredevils who can’t wait to show off their agility, go for the Hi-ZOOM.

If you’re in for adrenalin-pumping action, you won’t be disappointed. You’ll wind your way up the dome to parts of the course that are as high as 20m and you’ll fly down three zip lines, one of which will have you gliding right above Goliath. Remember to smile at this point. If you like the shot you can take it home as a souvenir at an additional cost.

Dome Climb

Tethered to the outside of the dome and wearing a harness, you’ll walk around the 60cm wide platform enjoying spectacular views from all angles. Look out to the Trinity Inlet, the mountains to the west, and the beaches to the north. And it’s hands-free, so you’ll be able to take plenty of selfies.

Power Jump

End your Dome Climb with the Power Jump! Attached to a rope you’ll take off from a 13m tall tower inside the Dome. Falling at high speed you’ll end with a soft landing thanks to a fan contraption. Strike a pose on the way down. Or…you could just descend via the staircase.
