9 Day - 8 Night Cairns to Cape York 4x4 Adventure Tour

This awesome 4WD adventure tour has several options where travellers can choose to fly direct to Cape York and enjoy the drive back, or drive to Cape York and fly back to Cairns

If you have always wanted to go on the trails of our pioneers to see historic sights of interest and meet the real Australian's of the outback then join us on our small personalised group tours from Cairns to Cape York.

We only guide a maximum of 6 people at a time in each 4WD vehicle ensuring our outback Queensland tours are personal. If you advise our tour guides of your specific interests they will do their utmost to ensure you see or experience it on this guided four wheel drive tour.

Please note we only run our Cape York tours in the months of mid May to late September to avoid the green season rains.

Cape York Tour option 1: Drive/Fly – 9 Days - 8 Nights

This tour involves driving from Cairns to Cape York before returning via a flight from Cape York back to Cairns. 

Day 1 – Cairns to Cooktown via Daintree Rainforest 

Meals: Lunch & Dinner Provided

Overnight at: Daintree Rainforest (ensuite)

You will start your Cape York four wheel drive tour adventure with the scenic ocean drive north from Cairns along Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef Drive towards the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest.

Once at the Daintree you will board the Daintree River Cruise for an hour of exploring on this impressive ancient waterway, where you can spot water birds, pre-historic crocodiles and other native Australian animals.

After this short river cruise we cross the river via the Daintree Ferry to continue our way North towards Cape Tribulation.

There will be opportunities to get out and explore this amazing place with its thick lush tropical rainforests, rugged coastal headlands and long sandy beaches, before enjoying a delicious lunch prior to continuing.

After lunch we experience a taste of what is ahead as we engage 4WD and head into the amazing rainforest for some exploration and finally settling into our overnight accomodation.

Day 2 – Daintree Rainforest to Cooktown

We begin the day traversing the famous Bloomfield Track (weather permitting).

Along this track there are many scenic locations to see such as the Bloomfield Falls and Cedar Bay National Park, as well as the famous Lions Den pub – an icon of the North that is well worth checking out.

Continuing North, we stop at the mysterious Black Mountain before stopping for the day in the Historic township of Cooktown.

Day 3 – Cooktown to Coen/Musgrave 

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Provided

Overnight at: Coen/Musgrave (ensuite)

We begin day three with a visit to the Cooktown Botanical Gardens & Powerhouse Museum.

Take in the views from Grassy Hill Lookout – you will be amazed at the rugged natural beauty of this region. Heading west from Cooktown we travel through Battle Camp, Lakefield National Park and visit the “Old Laura” homestead.

Travelling through river valleys, past the countless giant termite mounds, we stop for our overnight stay at Coen or Musgrave.

Day 4 – Coen/Musgrave to Lockhart  

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Provided

Overnight at: Greenhoose Lockhart River (ensuite)

On day four we have a big drive ahead of us. 

Today we continuing our adventure to one of Australia's most remote area's we head east exploring the Sir William Thompson Range and then crossing the Pascoe River, we head to Iron Range National Park.

As we enter the National Park, we see the spectacular Mount Tozer at the peak of the table range, before descending down to Lockhart River a unique aboriginal community situated on the ocean at Lloyd Bay.

Heading onwards further north - exploring the many wonders of the Iron Range National Park whilst enjoying the dense tropical rainforest being the largest remaining area of lowland rainforest in Australia.

We arrive at Lockhart River for our overnight stay

Day 5 – Lockhart to Weipa  

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Provided

Overnight at: Weipa (ensuite)

We begin our journey early and head to our destination of Weipa four wheel driving inland through the National Parks and into savannah landscapes the countryside of Cape York.

We arrive late afternoon after some sightseeing and settle into the Heritage Resort to freshen up and get ready for a nice country style dinner.    

Day 6 – Weipa to Bramwell  

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Provided

Overnight at: Bramwell Station

On day 5 we explore the coastal mining town of Weipa, the largest town in Cape York and home to around 3000 people who are supported by the mining and cattle export industries.

While in Weipa you will do a Weipa Eco Cruise tour before departing for Bramwell Station where we will be staying.

Day 7 – Bramwell to Cape York  

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Provided

Overnight at: Loyalty Beach (shared bathroom)

After departing Bramwell we travel across one of the largest cattle stations on the Cape – Batavia Downs – to commence what is sure to be one of the highlights of the tour.

It is now time to join one of the old original telegraph tracks which we follow north to visit Elliot Falls and Fruit Bat Falls.

We join the Bamaga Development Road and follow this to the Cape’s most famous river, the Jardine, where we cross on a cable-ferry. Continuing on we then stop at Loyalty Beach where we stay for the next 2 nights.

Day 8 – Cape York to the Tip

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Provided

Overnight at: Loyalty Beach (shared bathroom)

Today we can relax and explore this beautiful part of the Cape.

We’ll visit the remains of Somerset, set up by the Jardine Family as a cattle station and government outpost.

Walk along secluded beaches, spot sea turtles and dugongs if you’re lucky.

After a morning of exploring we jump back in the 4WDs for the drive north to Australia’s most northern point, the very tip of Australia.

Get a photo with the famous sign and enjoy a drink with views over the Torres Strait.

On Day 9 - Thursday Island and Cape York

Flight from Horn Island to Cairns

Today we change things up slightly, swapping dusty tracks for blue ocean as we take a boat cruise across the Torres Strait to Thursday Island.

On the island enjoy a guided tour and learn the rich history of the island and Torres Strait culture.

Situated between Cape York and Australia’s closest neighbour New Guinea, Thursday Island has a rich history and natural beauty that will be a pleasant change from the scenery of the bush.

Today we also take a ferry to Horn Island, where we have a short tour before  being transferred to the Horn Island Airport for your flight back to Cairns landing at approximately 5.00pm.

Your flight back to Cairns ends your 9 day 8 night Cape York four wheel drive tour and outback Queensland adventure.

Cape York Tour option 2: Fly/Drive – 8 Days

This tour involves flying directly to Cape York before heading back to Cairns via land in our comfortable 4WDs. 

Day 1 Fly from Cairns to Cape York

Your Cape York adventure starts with the flight from Cairns to Horn Island.

Transfers from Cairns CBD to Cairns airport are available upon request if need be.

After touching down on Horn Island, take a guided tour of this interesting island.

Enjoy a delicious lunch on Horn Island before boarding the ferry for the transfer to Thursday Island where we explore this small island that is part of Torres Strait culture and history.

Thursday Island is situated between Cape York and Australia’s nearest neighbour New Guinea.

We then transfer by ferry to Seisa on the Mainland and make our way to our accommodation; this will be our home for the next two nights.  

Day 2 – Cape York & The Tip of Australia

Day 3 – Cape York to Bramwell

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Provided

oday we leave Cape York behind us as we travel South through the Jardine National Park over the Great Dividing Range, with views of the blue waters of the Coral Sea to the East.

We cross the Jardine River via the cable ferry before arriving at Fruit Bat Falls.

Enjoy a scenic walk along the board walk, have a quick dip to cool off before driving a little further along to stop for lunch.

After lunch we continue to Bramwell Station to spend the night.

Day 4 – Bramwell to Weipa

Overnight at: Weipa

This morning we make a visit to the Morton Telegraph Station – an important communication link to the Far North which operated until 1960.

Back in the 4WDs we travel south, crossing many creeks and streams along the way before crossing Batavia Downs – one of the largest cattle stations in the Cape.

We then head towards the largest town in the Cape – Weipa – to enjoy a stroll through the township and port of Weipa, exploring the amazing coastline before relaxing to enjoy a lazy afternoon in our accommodation where we spend the night.

Day 5 – Weipa to Lockhart

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Provided

Overnight at: Lockhart River

Today we continuing our adventure to one of Australia's most remote area's we head east exploring the Sir William Thompson Range and then crossing the Pascoe River, we head to Iron Range National Park.

Day 6 – Lockhart to Coen/Musgrave

Today we continue our journey south, travelling along the southern leg of the Old Telegraph Track to Archer River – one of the Cape’s well-known river crossings – before heading to our home for the night, Coen or Musgrave.

Day 7 – Coen/Musgrave to Cooktown

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Provided

Overnight at: Cooktown

We make an early start from Coen/Musgrave to head into Lakefield National Park, exploring some of the most spectacular parts of the National Park – Red and White Lilly Lagoons.

Travelling through river valleys and past the countless giant termite mounds, we arrive at “Old Laura” Homestead.

We then travel a short way to ‘Welcome Waterhole” wetlands, on to Battle Camp Track which we follow to Cooktown.

Enjoy lunch in this historic township before spending the afternoon visiting the beautiful Botanical Gardens and the Powerhouse Museum.

Day 8 – Cooktown to Cairns Via the Daintree Rainforest

Overnight at: Your accommodation back in Cairns (not included)

Leaving Cooktown we follow the Bloomfield Track south towards the Daintree, stopping along the way to take in the impressive and mysterious Black Mountain, the beautiful Bloomfield Falls and the Cedar Bay National Park.

Continuing on to Cape Tribulation, we stop to give you the opportunity to explore coastal headlands and long sandy beaches fringed with tropical rainforest, before enjoying a delicious lunch prior to our journey through the World Heritage-listed Rainforest.

We stop at the famous Daintree Ice Cream Company where you can enjoy a yummy treat (at own expense) before we cross the Daintree river via cable ferry.

We then join an afternoon river cruise on this ancient river where amazing birdlife and big crocodiles are often seen.

We complete the 8 day Cape York adventure with a relaxed drive along the scenic Captain Cook Highway to arrive back in Cairns.

Additional Information

Luggage: Please note each passenger is only entitled to take one bag (preferably soft sided) 80cm X 30cm X 30cm in size, no more than 10 kgs. No suitcases allowed due to limited space. You may also bring a small day bag or pack weighing no more than 4kg. Baggage over this amount cannot be carried without prior arrangement. Note that if you choose to fly one way the 10kg luggage per person is a strict limit with the small airline.

  • Clothing: shorts, trousers, shirts, swimwear, hat, sunglasses, jacket and warm clothes in case of inclement weather.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes and some form of fast-drying wet-shoe would prove useful.
  • Personal: Photo ID, beach towel, torch, sun protection, insect repellent, medications, toiletries, overseas travellers should bring a suitable adapters, video/camera with lots of free space and spare batteries, money/credit cards for personal expenses such as drinks or souvenirs.

Cancellation policy: Bookings cancelled more than 60 days prior to departure will incur a fee of 50% of deposit or $200 whichever is greater. 

Bookings cancelled between 60 and 45 days prior to departure will incur a fee of 25% of tour total. 

Bookings cancelled between 45 and 30 days prior to departure will incur a fee of 50% of tour total.

Bookings cancelled between 30 and 14 days prior to departure will incur a fee of 75% of tour total. 

Bookings cancelled less than 14 days prior to departure will incur a fee of 100% of tour total.
