Cape York tours, a bucket list tour to the top of Australia for a 3 day scenic air tour to see Cape York and visit the top end for that famous photo overlooking the Torres Strait and her Islands. We have been flying to Cape York for over 25 years and know this part of Australia intimately.
Departing from Cairns we take to the air in our fixed wing aircraft on our way northwards to the tip of Cape York in Australia for our 3 day explore North Queensland air tour.
We fly at a low level enabling a better view of the coastline of eastern Australia, the Great Barrier Reef and her World Heritage listed rainforests as we make our way to our first destination Cooktown.
We enjoy all the historical and interesting sites and learn all about the pioneering days and see the places that Captain Cook came ashore and spent some time whilst repairing his ship.
Our next stop and overnight destination is Horn Island where we visit the Heritage Museum and art gallery and enjoy some free time to explore this northern Australian outpost.
We are then off on a ferry cruise to Thursday Island, a place that is home to a valuable pearling industry, and which was once a British Empire outpost.
Our next flight will take us from Horn Island to fly south over the Torres Straits and down the west coast of the Cape to Weipa.
This remote and little known region is a haven for barramundi, prawn (shrimp) spawning the crocodiles habitat with its continuous beaches and numerous river deltas, arriving at Weipa set on magnificent Albatross Bay.
After enjoying the sights and sounds of Weipa our next destination is Coen and landing at Musgrave Station for a nice lunch and a chat with the locals.
Then we make our way back to Cairns along the Great Barrier Reef and her fringing rainforests where we all depart and bid our farewells.
Monday - Day 1 (L&D)
Departing Cairns at 8.30am your scenic flight takes you out over the magnificent scenery of the Great Barrier Reef as we make our way to our first stop in Cooktown. Enjoy a historical tour of Cooktown, taking in information of Captain Cooks visit through to the Gold Rush days that brought miners from round the world, to today’s more relaxed northern Australian lifestyle.
Your tour of Cooktown includes all points of interest in town, see where the Endeavour was rebuilt; Captain Cooks Monument and the ship's cannon are all in the museum! Enjoy the view from Grassy Hill lookout and Pioneer Cemetery before enjoying a well-earned break over lunch at the local RSL.
There is also some free time to explore the township and do some souvenir shopping.
Departing Cooktown at 1.30pm your flight takes you past Lizard Island with its magnificent Blue Lagoon. See Princess Charlotte Bay, Lockhart River, and other remote tropical wilderness regions that others rarely see as you fly around Cape York, Australia’s most northerly point, then we make our way over the Torres Straits to Horn Island.
Stop at Horn Island for your overnight at the Gateway Resort.
The later part of the afternoon offers free time to explore the island's Heritage Museum and Art Gallery both of which display a comprehensive coverage of the Islander's traditional lifestyle, encompassing local culture, myths and of course the legendary pearling days when fleets of lugers combed the starts for its riches and the wartime history of the nation's front line defences!
Tuesday - Day 2 (B,L&D)
Breakfast at 7.30am at Gateway Hotel before taking a walk (5 minutes) down to the jetty for our ferry cruise to fascinating Thursday Island.
Once a remote outpost of the British Empire and vital port serving shipping through the straits, hosting a valuable pearling industry and the now the administrative centre for the Torres Strait Islands.
Your tour takes you through areas that have little changed in time, past historical Customs House and old hotels dotted amongst modern teaching and medical facilities, along to Green Hill Fort which was built to defend agents from the Russians in Crimean War days, replete with its underground museum and spectacular views of the surrounding islands, Prince of Wales Island, Horn Island, Good Island, Hammond Island and Friday Island with its pearling station.
Today will be full of enjoyment and relaxation as the Torres Strait Islands are likely to be full of pleasant surprises that you will always remember.
After lunch, travel back to Horn Island Airport, a hive of activity with flights going to and from the many islands.
Fly south over the Torres Straits and down the west coast of the Cape to Weipa. This remote and little known region is a haven for barramundi, prawn (shrimp) spawning the crocodiles habitat with its continuous beaches and numerous river deltas, arriving at Weipa set on magnificent Albatross Bay.
Enjoy diner with a complimentary wine while watching the beautiful sunset into the Gulf of Carpentaria Sea
Wednesday - Day3 (B&L)
After a relaxing evening spent in Weipa and an early morning breakfast, it's time to take a tour of the area. Weipa was once a remote mission and is now host to vast bauxite mining operation, an enterprise to be admired that has grown from its rugged beginnings to become a major supplier to the international market supported by a well-established, diverse and modem community.
After morning tea at the shopping centre we fly over Coen in the centre of the 'Cape', landing at the Musgrave Station in time for lunch. Here we may cross paths and have a yarn with the 4 wheel drive travellers as they tackle their arduous adventure to 'The Cape'.
Then it’s time to make your way back to Cairns, flying over Laura, the magnificent Rainforest lined Daintree River Valley and Port Douglas, the views are sublime, you can look down on the inland river systems and homesteads of Cape York all day long.
