Hervey Bay
Known as the Whale Watch Capital of Australia, Hervey Bay is the only place on the Eastern seaboard where humpback whales take a break from their annual migration south to play and rest in the warm, sheltered waters.
The Humpback whales begin to arrive in Hervey Bay from mid-July and remain until the end of October/beginning of November before heading south to Antarctic waters.
Fraser Island
Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island, measuring 1840 square kilometres. The island is famous for its 120km of pristine beaches, crystal clear lakes, abundant wildlife and fishing. It is also famous for spotting humpback whales as they migrate along the east coast of Australia between July and November.
July to October is the peak time for tailor fishing on the eastern side of Fraser Island. Many areas also attract bream and mackerel.
The western side of Fraser Island offers some great fishing spots where keen anglers catch bream, flathead, cod, whiting, golden trevally and mangrove jack.
The island also boats stunning natural rainforest and beautiful freshwater lakes that are ideal to swim in, stunning sand formations and the famous Maheno Shipwreck, which tells the tale of one of Queensland’s most colourful maritime disasters.
