The Daintree Rainforest

It may look like the land that time forgot, but the legends and culture are very much alive in this jungle. And the magical domain you’re entering on this walking tour just happens to be the oldest rainforest in existence!

The majestic Daintree is estimated at over 150 million years old, which sounds absolutely prehistoric when you think that dinosaurs died out 60 million years ago; and just as fascinating to imagine this forest is countless millennia older than the Amazon. Yet this place is a living, breathing kingdom of emerald wonder.

You won’t believe your eyes as you wander through goliath emerald trees that seem to brush the sky, but you’ll find it easy to fathom the tales of otherworldly legend you’ll hear.

The famed Daintree rainforest is also the only place on the planet where two world heritage icons meet; its ancient shoreline tapers into the vast blue marvel of the Great Barrier Reef!

Cape Tribulation and the Bloomfield Track

Shaped like an evergreen basin, surrounded by an amphitheatre of rainforest mountains, you’ll find the jungle paradise of Cape Tribulation. Your walking extravaganza today not only takes you to this iconic domain of lush valleys and pristine beaches, but you’ll also explore the legendary Bloomfield Track along with it.

It’s here at these breathtaking destinations that you’ll see the magnificent panorama of the Great Barrier Reef, with Snapper Island on the horizon. The small isle looks like a lazing crocodile, but according to indigenous Aboriginal legend, it is in fact a dog with his tail cut off by an axe-wielding woman!

Fascinating tales such as this one are some of the Aborignal cultural highlights you can expect, along with swimming in crystal clear streams, uncovering cascading waterfalls, and indulging in a sumptuous picnic lunch away from the crowds on the shores of uninhabited rivers.

World Heritage Flora and Fauna

You may know by now, that your walking trek will take you deep into the realms of the sublime Daintree Rainforest; the oldest jungle known to civilisation.

Yet you might not be aware that this place of natural and cultural significance is also a sanctuary for some of the most rare flora and fauna on the planet too. The Daintree is home to 30% of the country’s reptile species, and 40% of butterflies. Some of which are only found in these parts, worldwide! So keep your eyes peeled for an electric-blue Ulysses, or a phenomenal water dragon on the shorelines. Or it might even be your lucky day to spot a cassowary; a 2m rainbow-plumed bird.

Juan and his people boast and upkeep a harmonious relationship with this forest. And while this area has helped the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people thrive for countless years, they are dedicated conservationists, only taking what they deem necessary from the wild for food and medicine.

Hear Legends and Customs of the Kuku Yalanji People

Harmonious and ethereal custodians of the land, the timeless legend of the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people comes alive on this unrevealing trek. As you walk through the gargantuan trees of this ancient rainforest (some as tall as 44m), you’ll hear how their legends and customs are fused with the very earth. They are one of the few, if only, indigenous people who still have their own language and culture.

You’ll not only hear about the riveting folklore of these people, but their phenomenal skill of understanding weather and tide cycles, and complex knowledge of gathering seasonal plants and animals. But perhaps the real magic of this walking trek is not just a discovery of the Daintree (oldest rainforest in the world), but the stunningly beautiful history revealed of the Kuku Yalanji’s ancestors watching over the domain in spirit form, protecting its inhabitants and visitors.

Walk a Magical Aboriginal Cultural Trek

Embark on a wondrous fusion of spectacular sightseeing and awe-inspiring legend. In the ancient depths of the Daintree Rainforest, you’ll be taken on a superb adventure by Juan, member of the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people, and cultural representative of their customs.

They’ll even be an interactive display of gathering ‘Bush Tucker’ as you’re led to magnificent streams and waterfalls. It’s here that you’ll frolic in crystal-clear waters in wild and uninhabited bushland.

These aboriginal cultural sites are also the place where you’ll indulge in a picnic lunch on freshwater shores. And as Juan presents a world heritage icon to visitors, he is likewise sharing a rare way of life you’re able to live for a day!
