But considering the day is jam-packed with thrill-seeking antics – such as rapid swimming, raft surfing and cliff jumping – you’ll need all the time you can get.
Once you’ve pushed off from the bank of the world famous Tully River in your raft you won’t be blurry-eyed for long. This we can guarantee!.
Our Tully River Extreme White Water Rafting tour is ideal for confident, competent swimmers who love white water rafting and those that are looking for the next challenge; this day will definately not leave you disappointed.
Under the guidance of our highly-skilled white water rafting river guides, you’ll navigate the rapids of the Tully River through the more thrilling pathways.
Located in the pristine World-Heritage listed rainforest this is certainly a unique way to experience its wildlife and natural beauty.
As you travel to the Tully River from Cairns you’ll receive a safety briefing. Then it’s time to settle in and take in the scenery as you drive past sugar cane fields, banana plantations and mountains fringed with low-lying cloud.
This, and the bus ride home, will be the most relaxing parts of your day.
Share your selfie on our Facebook page and tag your best Instagram pics with #barrierreefaustralia for your chance to be featured.
Whether coming from the Northern Beaches of Cairns or city accommodation, you will be taken to the meeting point in our office via complimentary bus transfer.
After quickly settling any medical paper work or payments, you’ll be on your way.
Check in for the Tully River white water rafting tour is a smooth process as the aim of the day is to maximise your thrill-seeking time on the river.
Your host on the bus – one of the river guides who will spend the day with the group – will take to the mike with a lot of energy.
No doubt intended to jolt you out of any early-morning fogginess, you’ll be given an overview of the day ahead before being invited to sit back and relax for the remainder of the ride.
Travelling from Cairns down the Bruce Highway through a picturesque backdrop of cane fields and banana plantations framed by the distant coastal mountains, you’d be forgiven for forgetting you’re on your way to a day of thrills and spills.
After approximately an hour and 45 minutes you’ll stop at the Feluga Hotel, where those who have driven themselves from Cairns, Mission Beach or Townsville will be meeting the rest of the group.
This is where you’ll also have a chance to grab a bite to eat that you pre-ordered on the bus.
It’s another 40-minute drive from the Feluga Hotel to the Tully River.
You’ll know you’re nearly there when the road starts narrowing as you drive deeper into the World Heritage listed rainforest of Mission Beach.
Upon arrival, it’s a quick change into your rafting gear if you’re not already wearing it.
Wear anything you don’t mind getting wet, as long as it’ll dry quickly and won’t weigh you down.
It’s recommended you wear a t-shirt as well, to protect your shoulders from getting sunburnt under the Queensland tropical sunshine.
The essential part of the outfit for the day are rubber-soled shoes. Ideally lace-ups, but if you know they won’t slip off in fast-moving water, then you’re good to go.
If you don’t have anything suitable shoe you can hire a pair at our Cairns office before setting off. Wet suits are also available for hire.
There are up to seven people on each white water raft, plus your highly experienced white water rafting guide.
Their goal is to make you feel as comfortable and confident as possible, giving you guidance every step of the way where necessary.
Our river guides know every bump and gring in the Tully River more intimately than you could ever imagine.
The Xtreme white water rafting session is designed to be conducted in a smaller overall group to allow you to go harder and faster, tackling more technical manouvres.
There are less rafts travelling at the one time rather than the regular Tully River White Water Rafting tour, generally no more than four.
With up to 44 rapids to raft on the Tully River there’s no time to waste, so you’ll be riding your first lot of white water within minutes of pushing off.
The beauty of the day is that the hard work of tackling the Tully River rapids is peppered with moments of floating down stream in your life jacket, looking up at the rainforest canopy and towering gorge.
And not because you’ve been thrown out of the raft, but because it’s a calm stretch and your guide has invited you to relax, relieve some tension and have a nice calming swim.
You’ll ride the rapids through the more challenging pathways; you’ll flip the raft over – on purpose; you’ll plop out of the raft to float down small rapids and natural waterslides; and you’ll cliff jump.
Among this raft-flipping fun, you’ll stop for lunch on the side of the river.
Eventually all good things must come to an end. After changing in to your dry clothes you’ll board the bus and set off to the Feluga Hotel.
Throughout the day the professional photographer would’ve situated himself in optimal positions along the Tully River to capture action shots of your group tackling the challenging white water rapids throughout the day.
Grab a soft drink, or beer, and snack and have a laugh at the pics with your group.
In addition to the photos there are a few souvenirs available for purchase.
You white water rafting crew will have these set up at the hotel.
Then it’s on the bus to cruise home Cairns way. Chances are you’ll be keen on an early night.
