  • Shark Fin Bay is named after a naturally shaped rock and accessible only via sea kayak offering many hidden wonders
  • Be sure to listen to your guide who will give you the best tips and tricks to enjoy your paddling on the day. Make sure you lather the sunscreen on – especially under your chin as the water will reflect the sun

From your starting point on Fitzroy Island, your guide will have already chosen the best route and snorkelling locations for the day and will be ready to lead you on your adventure.

With no motors and no noise, you'll cruise across the water away from the crowds and see the creatures of the reef up close turtles, reef sharks and rays. Unspoilt locations such as Little Fitzroy Island and Shark Fin Bay are not accessed by large commercial vessels and remain full of hidden highlights. Take the time on your return journey to enjoy some snorkelling or pull into one of the island's secluded beaches not accessible by foot.

On your return, enjoy your fresh picnic lunch with wraps, seasonal fruits and snacks before having the afternoon to do as much or as little as you choose.

Fitzroy Island

Experience the beauty of Fitzroy Island and discover some amazing marine life and wildlife. If you look below you under the jetty you are sure to see an array of numerous species of fish. To the right of the jetty, there is the operator's beach hire hut for your snorkel gear, a monstrous water trampoline (seasonal), a boulder rock area that contains some of the best areas on the island to snorkel and a path leading to Nudey Beach (not a nudist beach).

To the left of the jetty are the Fitzroy Island campground and toilet facilities. In the middle of Fitzroy Island is a beautiful 5-star resort.

Activities On Fitzroy Island

Great Barrier Reef sea kayaking tours are a great way to get a good look at the island and look for sea turtles. You will have a quick briefing on the basics of sea kayaking and off you go. Kayaking is an excellent experience to share with a friend as all of the kayaks are doubles. If you are travelling alone, the guide will pair you up with another sea kayaker or you may even get to go with the guide!  The kayak tour lasts approximately 3 hours and will take you around Fitzroy island, around shark fin bay and over to Little Fitzroy Island, a small but tall island right next to Big Fitzroy Island.

Foxy's Cafe is also a very popular choice for food and beverage during your visit to this stunning Island. The cafe is attached to Fitzroy Island Resort.

Fitzroy Island Hiking Trails

Fitzroy Island has 800 acres of National Park and wildlife to explore.

  • The lighthouse track (which leads to the original, still standing Fitzroy Island lighthouse) is 3.6 km return and takes 1.5 hours.
  • The Summit Circuit is 4.2 km return and takes 2 hours.
  • The secret garden track is 1 km return and takes 30 minutes.
  • The most popular for day visitors is the Nudey Beach Track which is 1 ½ km return and takes 45 minutes. Nudey Beach Track leads to a pristine beach with sand that feels like silk. The water is incredibly clear and this side of the island has a gorgeous fresh sea breeze to cool you down on those hot island days.

Snorkelling At Fitzroy Island

Many parts of Fitzroy Island's fringing reef are untouched and stunning to snorkel amongst. The best places on the island to snorkel are at Shark Fin Bay and at the corner of Fitzroy Island that separates Nudey Beach from the beach hut. This area has the most diverse corals of the island all in one area. For the best experience, snorkel over from Nudey Beach and back – you will not believe how different the corals look during the trips back and forth!

Ocean Trampoline (seasonal)

If you still have the energy left, have a go at jumping on the ocean trampoline (open at various times of the year). Bounce as high as you can without hurting anyone else and fly into the water below. Alternatively, jump on the Fitzroy Island water trampoline with your friends and see who can stay on the longest!

Optional Extra Activities

The glass bottom boat tour gives guests the opportunity to see the Great Barrier Reef from a whole new perspective. Enjoy a 30 minute guided tour including a Great Barrier Reef Coral and Great Barrier Reef marine life interpretation.

Or if you're looking for some time to self-explore, jump on one of the Stand Up Paddle Boards and see where the waters take you.
