Why choose a helicopter fly–cruise reef tour from Hamilton Island

This tour is designed for travellers who want to see the Great Barrier Reef from both above and below the water in a single day, without long outbound boat travel.

Flying out by helicopter maximises reef time and delivers unmatched aerial views of the Whitsunday Islands and iconic reef formations, while the relaxed cruise return provides a scenic and comfortable journey back to Hamilton Island.

This experience suits guests with limited time, first-time reef visitors, and travellers looking for a premium reef encounter that combines adventure with comfort.

What to expect on the day

Your day begins with a complimentary hotel pickup on Hamilton Island and transfer to the heli terminal. After check-in, a safety briefing and weigh-in, you board the helicopter for a low-level scenic flight over the Whitsundays.

The helicopter lands directly on the Reefworld pontoon at Hardy Reef, where you spend approximately 2.5 hours snorkelling, reef viewing, dining and relaxing. In the afternoon, you return to Hamilton Island by catamaran, cruising back through the islands.

This is a one-way fly and one-way cruise experience.

Scenic helicopter flight to Hardy Reef

Aerial views of the Whitsundays and Heart Reef

Lift off from Hamilton Island on a scenic helicopter flight that passes over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, Hook Island and the outer reef. From the air, you’ll see the colour contrasts of silica sands, turquoise lagoons and coral formations, including the world-famous Heart Reef.

This flight delivers perspectives not possible by boat.

Reefworld pontoon experience at Hardy Reef

After landing, you disembark directly onto the Reefworld floating pontoon, permanently moored on Hardy Reef.

This purpose-built reef platform provides safe, structured access to the outer Great Barrier Reef, making it suitable for both confident swimmers and guests who prefer to stay dry.

You will spend approximately 2.5 hours at the pontoon.

Snorkelling and underwater reef viewing

Snorkelling takes place in designated reef zones adjacent to the pontoon, with all equipment provided. Crew assist with fitting and flotation devices are available.

For guests who prefer not to enter the water, the underwater viewing chamber allows close-up coral and marine life observation while staying completely dry.

Marine life commonly seen includes reef fish, coral gardens, giant clams and occasional turtles.

Lunch and onboard facilities

A tropical buffet lunch is served on the pontoon during your stay. Reefworld facilities include shaded areas, seating, restrooms and freshwater access.

This makes the experience comfortable even for guests who choose not to snorkel.

Return cruise to Hamilton Island

At the conclusion of your reef visit, you board a luxury catamaran for the cruise return to Hamilton Island.

This relaxed journey passes through the Whitsunday Islands, providing a calm and scenic end to the day after the excitement of the helicopter flight.
