Explore World-Heritage listed rainforest on this day tour where you’ll glide high above the rainforest canopy in a gondola; wander along boardwalks to take in incredible views of the mighty Barron Falls; cuddle a koala, and learn about this amazing ecosystem.

After a pick-up from your Port Douglas accommodation, you’ll coast along the scenic Great Barrier Reef Drive to the Skyrail Cableway Rainforest Terminal. After boarding your gondola, you’ll climb the Atherton Tablelands to your first destination: Kuranda. Known as the ‘Village in the Rainforest’, this popular tourist destination still manages to retain its quaint, artsy vibe. Featuring an array of locally-made arts and crafts, the Kuranda Heritage Markets are a must.

Only five minutes away is the Rainforestation Nature Park. Here you’ll venture across land and lake aboard an amphibious World War II army duck while your captain identifies and explains fascinating plants along the way. You’ll then have a chance to get up close and personal and you’ll interact with some of Australia’s most-loved native animals.

Your Coach Pick-Up

Your coach will collect you from your Port Douglas accommodation. You can expect a pick up as early as 7.45am, however the exact time will be communicated to you upon booking. You’ll then make your way along the scenic Great Barrier Reef Drive – easily one of the most beautiful coastal roads in Australia.

Gliding Above Rainforest Canopy

Your first stop is the Skyrail Rainforest Terminal, where you’ll board your gondola at approximately 9.45am. As you climb towards Kuranda, the Village in the Rainforest, you’ll glide above the rainforest canopy before descending to the forest floor to alight and explore on foot. The first stop is Red Peak Station where you can join the complimentary ranger-guided tour as they share their knowledge on the inner workings of the ancient rainforest. The next stop is the Skyrail Barron Falls Station. Here you’ll visit the Rainforest Interpretation Centre, which Skyrail developed together with the CSIRO to provide visitors with a fun and informative learning experience.

Upgrade to Diamond View (optional)

Upgrade to the Diamond View gondola, where, in addition to the spectacular panoramic views across Cairns, the Coral Sea, and the Cairns Highlands, you’ll have the unique experience of being able to see through the floor of the carriage to the treetops below

The Village in the Rainforest

You’ll arrive at Kuranda at about 11.20am where you’ll have approximately two hours to explore the quaint village at your leisure. The daily Heritage Markets epitomise the ingrained arts culture of the village and are a must-do. You’ll find a range of local arts and crafts, including handmade leather goods, pottery, glasswork, jewellery, and more. Have a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants, or put your walking shoes to use, venturing along one of the surrounding tracks; there’s a walk suitable for every age or fitness level. If time permits, explore one of the top tourist attractions, including Birdworld, Australia’s largest butterfly sanctuary, or the Kuranda Koala Gardens. Discounts are provided as part of the Kuranda Boarding Pass; however, the final entry cost is at your own expense.

Rainforestation Nature Park

The Rainforestation shuttle will pick you up from the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary at around 1.15pm. Only five minutes from Kuranda, Rainforestation Nature Park is 40 hectares of lush gardens and tropical landscape offering a unique exploration of World Heritage-listed rainforest.

You’ll board the amphibious World War II army duck, traversing both land and water as your guide identifies fascinating plants and wildlife along the way. You’ll then have a chance to meet many native species such as crocodiles, dingoes, snakes, lizards, and the endangered Cassowary who call Rainforestation home. Be sure to handfeed kangaroos and wallabies, cuddle a koala, or hold a baby crocodile. It’s also the only place in North Queensland where you’ll find a Tasmanian Devil.

Your Historic Journey Home

For the return journey home, it’s all aboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway at 3.30pm. Built in the late 1800s, this incredible railway winds its way through 15 tunnels – hand-made by the pioneers of Far North Queensland – over dozens of bridges, and past spectacular lookouts. The commentary along the way will bring the stories of its development to life. Even by today’s standards its construction is considered a remarkable engineering feat. Upon arrival at the station your coach will be waiting to take you back to your Port Douglas accommodation.
