Kuranda’s Scenic Railway is an ideal way to discover the World Heritage rainforest on Cairns doorstep. A treat for all the family as well as train enthusiasts and nature lovers, this railway follows the old mining tracks built in 1891, winding its way through the Macalister Range’s rugged mountains.

Sitting in the original carriages pulled by a 1960s, diesel electric locomotive, this train trip is a unique and exciting way to view the scenic rainforest as well as the spectacular Barron Falls and Barron Gorge.

An engineering feat of historical significance, you’ll observe amazing views of the valleys as you go through 15 hand-made tunnels, traverse 98 curves and cross 37 bridges. Arriving in Kuranda, the famous village in the rainforest, the many attractions include visiting the popular market, butterfly sanctuary or unique venom zoo and going on a riverboat rainforest tour.

Start your journey at Cairns Central or Freshwater Station and opt to return the same stunning way or by coach.

Travel in Style

Your world-best travel experience begins with your stylish carriage. In the Heritage Class you will marvel at the refurbished original carriages which are beautifully crafted from lovely red wood. Being over 100 years old they offer a unique experience that the whole family will enjoy. Water stations and toilets in the carriages add to passenger and family comfort.

And to further appreciate the history, fascinating photos depict the development of the railway. You’ll be amazed at this incredible construction feat, how the railway was constructed against all odds!

Memorable Sights

Spectacular views and photo opportunities greet you as the train winds itself 328 metres above sea level. Mountains, stunning waterfalls and dramatic gorges are part of the breathtaking scenery showcased by this tropical paradise during the two hours of your memorable trip. This also includes World Heritage-listed rainforest with hundreds of flowering plants, trees, orchids, palms and animals. A souvenir trip guide available in nine languages is yours to keep.

Kuranda Attractions

A choice of attractions for the whole family await only a few minutes’ walk from Kuranda Railway Station. These include the Butterfly Sanctuary which has over 2000 butterflies and the largest moth in the world. For kids into centipedes, leaf insects, scorpions, spiders and snakes, the Venom Zoo and its live venom milking will intrigue them! For those wanting more genteel creatures to view, the Kuranda Riverboat and Rainforest Tour will appeal. Over 100 bird species can be seen, as well as turtles, fish and water dragons. Rainforest discovery walks will take you into a secluded area under the rainforest canopy to view the impressive ancient plant life of ferns, lianas and vines. All these attractions are optional and vary in admission rates.
