Once at the quaint ‘Village in the Rainforest’, explore at your own leisure. The daily Heritage Markets are a nod to the ingrained arts culture of Kuranda. You’ll find woodwork, jewellery, and more.

After a coach pick-up from your Cairns or Nothern Beaches accommodation you'll be taken to Tjapukai Cultral Park where you will be immersed in an exploration of the worlds oldest living cultre. You will learn about the creation story, take parkt in traditional dance and song, learnt to throw a returning boomerang. Enjoy lunch at Tjapuaki, or head up to Kuranda where you can grab a bite to eat at one of the many cafes.

The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway will be your mode of transport to Kuranda. Gliding over rainforest canopy you’ll take in spectacular views of Cairns, the Coral Sea, and the tropical landscape.

Once at the quaint ‘Village in the Rainforest’, explore at your own leisure. The daily Heritage Markets are a nod to the ingrained arts culture of Kuranda. You’ll find woodwork, jewellery, and more. Venture along one of the surrounding tracks, or explore one of the top wildlife attractions such as Kuranda Koala Gardens.

Your return-leg home aboard the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway will depart at 3.30pm, taking you on a journey through tunnels and past waterfalls tumbling into deep ravines. Once at Freshwater Station you’ll be transferred back to your accommodation.

Travel to Tjapukai

After a coach pick-up from your Cairns or Northern Beaches accommodation you’ll be taken to Tjapukai Cultural Park. The exact time of collection depends on where you’re staying, but expect an approximate pick-up time of around 8.15 – 8.30am.

Your time at Tjapukai will be filled with a range of interactive experiences, where you’ll discover more than you thought possible about the world’s oldest living culture. You’ll wander through the ‘History and Heroes’ exhibition, a homage to Indigenous heroes past and present; you’ll learn about the intricacies of playing the didgeridoo; you’ll learn about tribal law; you’ll discover all there is to know about bushfoods and their medicinal qualities; and you’ll even have a chance to throw a returning boomerang.

Lunch at Tjapukai (optional)

Tjapukai’s Flame Tree restaurant will serve up a buffet of native tastes and fresh salads. After this, you’ll head to the nearby Skyrail Rainforest Cableway Terminal for approximately 12.45pm. This lunch option means you’ll have slightly less time in Kuranda, but 1.5 hours it’s still a good stint to soak up the village atmosphere and see the sights.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

If you haven’t opted for lunch at Tjapukai, you’ll head to the Skyrail Terminal after your tour to board your gondola at around midday. Gliding over rainforest canopy you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the Coral Sea, Barron River, and tropical landscape.

Along the way, there are two rainforest stations. The first is Red Peak Station, where we recommend you join the complimentary ranger-guided tour, as you’ll learn so much more about the World Heritage-listed area than you would just reading the signs. The second stop is at Barron Falls Station. Here you’ll have access to the CSIRO Rainforest Interpretation Centre.

The Village in the Rainforest

Once you’ve arrived at Kuranda, you’ll have two hours to explore at your own leisure (or 1.5 hours if you’ve had lunch at Tjapukai). Grab a spot on the verandah of Frogs Restaurant for a bite to eat before wandering through the Heritage Markets to check out the stalls selling local arts and crafts. Or venture along the range of walking paths; there’s a track suitable for every age or fitness level. Or perhaps you’d like to explore one of the top tourist attractions, including Birdworld, Australia’s largest butterfly sanctuary, or the Kuranda Koala Gardens. Discounts are provided as part of the Kuranda Boarding Pass; however, the cost of final entry is at your own expense.

Kuranda Scenic Railway

For your return leg home make sure you’re at the Kuranda Scenic Railway Station 15 minutes prior to the 3.30pm departure. Winding through tunnels, across bridges, past thick rainforest, breathtaking views, and waterfalls tumbling into deep ravines, you’ll understand how lives were lost during the construction of this magnificent railway line in the late 1800s. The informative audio commentary brings the stories of the historic railway to life.

The journey will take approximately 90 minutes, which includes a stop along the way at the Barron Falls lookout. When sugar cane fields start to dominate the view, you know you’re nearing Freshwater Station where your coach transfer will be waiting to take you back to your accommodation.
