Your coach pick-up will collect you from your accommodation between 7 – 8.15am, depending on where you’re staying and whether you’ve chosen to travel to Kuranda aboard the Scenic Railway or the Skyrail first.
The Skyrail-first option only picks up guests staying in Cairns.
If you’ve chosen to start your journey to Kuranda aboard the historic Scenic Railway you’ll wind through tunnels, past thick rainforest, and waterfalls tumbling into deep ravines as you travel to the ‘Village in the Rainforest’, located 330m above sea level.
Once at Kuranda you’ll have some free time to explore. The Heritage Markets are a must-do and the many cafés provide the perfect pit-stop for coffee and a quick bite to eat.
You’ll then be collected by the Rainforestation Nature Park coach at the meeting point of the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, 100m from the markets Home to the Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience, the Koala & Wildlife Park, and rainforest explorations aboard the amphibious World War II army duck, you’ll walk away from this with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the surrounding World Heritage-listed rainforest.
You’ll journey home aboard the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Gliding above rainforest canopy you’ll enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Coral Sea and tropical landscape.
The exact pick-up time will vary depending on where you’re staying and which tour option you chose when booking. If you booked the Skyrail-first/return transfer option your day will start with a coach pick-up from your accommodation in Cairns or the Northern Beaches from approximately 7am.
If you booked the pick-up only option, you will be collected from your Cairns accommodation from 8.15am. You’ll then travel to Kuranda aboard the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.
For those travelling aboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway first, you’ll arrive at 8.50am to board your pre-allocated seat and carriage. Built in the late 1800s, the construction of this railway line is an engineering feat even by today’s standards. As you pass panoramic views, travel over dozens of bridges, through 15 tunnels, and around 93 curves, listen to the informative commentary; you’ll understand how lives were lost during its construction. The trip will take approximately 90 minutes.
If you’re travelling aboard the Skyrail first, the coach will collect you from your Cairns accommodation from 8.15am. At around 9.45am you would’ve started your journey, gliding above the rainforest canopy as you enjoy spectacular views of the Coral Sea and surrounding tropical landscape.
If travelling to Kuranda aboard the Scenic Railway, an upgrade to Gold Class is available. Here you’ll be treated to dedicated host service, lounge-style chairs, and delectable delights from the Tablelands and Queensland such as Gallo Dairyland cheese, Skybury coffee, Wondaree macadamias, Sirromet Wines, Great Northern lager, and more.
Upon arriving at Kuranda at around 10.20am, you’ll have 30 minutes to explore on your own. Wander through the Heritage Markets, venture along one of the many walking paths, or grab a coffee and a bite to eat at one of the many cafés. With eateries specialising in cuisine from Germany, Israel, France, and more, you’ll find something to whet your appetite.
If travelling aboard the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway first, you can expect to arrive in Kuranda at approximately 11.15am. Guests aboard this tour option will also have 30 minutes to explore the village.
The Rainforestation shuttle will pick you up from the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, located only 100m from the Heritage Markets. Rainforestation Nature Park is a 100-acre attraction offering a unique exploration of World Heritage-listed rainforest.
You’ll board the amphibious World War II army duck for a rainforest tour across both land and water, where your guide will identify and explain fascinating plants and wildlife along the way. You’ll meander through the tropical fruits orchard, with over 40 different species of exotic fruit trees. You’ll join the interactive Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience where you’ll experience a traditional welcome and smoking blessing. You’ll discover the medicinal and culinary qualities of bush tucker, you’ll have a go at boomerang throwing, and you’ll observe spear-throwing and didgeridoo-playing.
The park is also home to many native species such as crocodiles, dingoes, snakes, lizards, the endangered Cassowary. Handfeed kangaroos and wallabies, cuddle a koala, or hold a baby crocodile. It’s also the only place in North Queensland where you’ll find a Tasmanian Devil.
Enjoy the extensive buffet lunch with a wide variety of dishes to choose from such as soups, steak, sausages, chicken, potatoes and root vegetables, stir-fried noodles and vegetables and rice. Cold salads, tropical fruits, and cheeses are also on offer. Visit the Tropical Treats Juice Bar for a refreshing piece of fruit, an ice cream, or a fresh juice.

At 3.45pm you’ll board the Skyrail for your 7.5km return journey to Cairns. As your gondola descends from the Atherton Tablelands you’ll glide above rainforest canopy, over the Barron River, and past tumbling waterfalls. This is one of the most spectacular ways to experience the region’s World Heritage-listed rainforest, and along the way you’ll have an opportunity to alight at two rainforest stations, the first being Barron Falls. It’s here you’ll be able to visit the CSIRO Rainforest Interpretation Centre and wander along the boardwalks to view the almighty Barron Falls. Red Peak Station is the second stop. Here you can enjoy a complimentary ranger-guided tour. Allow approximately 20 minutes for each stop.
If you’ve travelled to Kuranda aboard the Skyrail already, you will ride the Kuranda Scenic Railway home.
For those travelling aboard the Skyrail for the return journey home, your coach will be waiting at Smithfield Terminal around 3.30 – 3.45pm for your transfer to your accommodation in Cairns and the Northern Beaches.
If you’ve opted for the pick-up only tour option, the tour will end at Cairns Central Station, and from there you’ll be able to make your own way to your accommodation.
