Mackay & Undine Sand Cay
Mid morning on your first day we will arrive for you to see Mackay Cay and Mackay Reef where you can jump in the water and begin your snorkelling adventure as the crew prepare an al fresco lunch.
This is a protected reef that is shallow and allows you to see beautiful corals, giant clams, turtles and colourful fish life up close.
Lizard Island
Beautiful Lizard Island was discovered by Captain Cook in 1770, and is now home to the world famous hide out for celebrities the Lizard Island Resort.
Guests may partake in a guided hike to the highest point of the island, known as Cook’s Look, where the mariner attempted to find a path through the maze of beautiful, but deadly reefs.
The well reported Blue Lagoon is where we will have a snorkel adventure among the legions of colorful tropical fish and view the giant clam gardens near the beach.
Keep your eyes open for the manta rays that visit Anchor Bay as they are simply spectacular to watch as they perform underwater ballet.
Other activities include walking along the island’s powdery white-sand beaches, or hiking up to Chinaman’s Ridge, searching for goannas (Australian monitor lizards) and a multitude of birds, such as sunbirds, honeyeaters, pheasant coucals, and a variety of terns along the way.
Cod Hole
Possibly the most well-known dive and snorkel site in the world can be found roughly 96 kilometres north of Cairns, at Cod Hole. Part of the string of long narrow Ribbon Reefs, Cod Hole is home to a group of very friendly potato cod, reaching up to 100 kilograms, that have become accustomed to snorkellers over the past 30 years. The giant fish approach quite closely, and can be hand fed at the site. Many other large and small reef fish populate this site, and during the winter months you may even be photobombed by a dwarf minke whale – they have been known to linger around for encounters with snorkelers for hours.
Dwarf Minke Whales
Each year these graceful creatures migrate to the stretch of reefs south of Lizard Island, known as the Ribbon Reefs. The inquisitive nature of the Minke Whale brings them close to boats in the region to linger with snorkelers, at times as close to up to a metre away. The whales are mostly encountered alone or in family groups of two or three, but can be in groups of up to eight.
Depart The Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina, Port Douglas at 11am. A tropical breakfast will be served while Phoenix One steams to your first idyllic snorkel destination. Arrive to Mackay Sand Cay mid-morning for snorkelling and exploring. A relaxing al fresco lunch is served as we steam to Rachel Carson Reef for an afternoon of more snorkelling, fishing or relaxing. As the sun sets, cocktails and canapés will be served on the sky bridge as the crew prepares your 5 star evening dinner. Our skipper will set sail towards Lizard Island while you lull the evening away sipping local wine before you nod off to sleep.
If your heart desires, we’ll help you rise at 6am to hike up Cook’s Look for the most breathtaking panoramic views over Lizard Island, her bays and the Ribbon Reefs. After a well-deserved breakfast we will spend the day exploring the islands beaches and bays, heading over to famous Blue Lagoon, snorkelling the kaleidoscopic Clam Gardens in Watsons Bay, and keeping our eyes out for the manta rays that visit Anchor Bay.
Dive in for a morning snorkel at the Clam Gardens before breakfast. We’ll head off around 10am to arrive at Ribbon Reef No. 9 where you can snorkel and explore the famous Pixie’s Pinnacle and Challenger Bay. Lunch is served before we head south to the renowned Cod Hole to experience the impressively puppy like Giant Potato Cod. We’ll stay overnight out at the Cod Hole. As the sun sets, cocktails are served on the fly bridge while you spot for dolphins heading out through the reef passage.
Snorkel, relax or fish before lunch is served as we steam towards Ribbon Reef No.5 where we will anchor overnight. Enjoy The Ribbon Reefs’ pristine coral gardens before late afternoon cocktails and dinner on the aft deck keeping a close eye out for curious Dwarf Minke Whales.
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast and a morning snorkel before departing for Ribbon Reef No. 3 at approximately 9:30am. Here, you will snorkel and explore the world famous sites, known as Steve’s Bommie and the Temple of Doom. Enjoy lunch before departing for Anderson Reef. This is our Captain’s favourite, a rarely visited destination and fantastic for snorkelling. Staying here overnight, you will enjoy immense starlit skies and 360-degree views of the Great Barrier Reef.
Awake to an inspiring sunrise (or sleep in decadently) before enjoying a relaxed breakfast and a morning snorkel amongst the coral gardens submersed amid hundreds of reef fish and marine wildlife. Lunch is served while heading off into the horizon for Opal Reef. You’ll have the opportunity to troll for mackerel or tuna along the way. Arrive to Opal Reef in the early afternoon for more snorkelling, followed by sunset cocktails and dinner service while we steam to Low Isles to drop anchor for the evening.
Awake to your last breakfast on board MY Phoenix One and watch as the sunrises over the mainland of Port Douglas. Enjoy a stroll on the island learning about the history of the lighthouse and its’ significance on the Coral Sea.
