The Coral Sea & Osprey Reef

The Coral Sea marine region is a remote ocean ecosystem recognised for its unique physical, ecological and heritage values. The Coral Sea islands and associated reefs support critical nesting sites for the green turtle and a range of seabird species such as noddies, terns, boobies, frigate birds and other migrational birds.

The reefs are also renowned for the diverse range of predatory fish such as albacore, yellowfin and bigeye tuna, broadbill swordfish, marlin and sharks that regularly pass through them.

Lying 110 kilometres north east of the northern Great Barrier Reef, Osprey Reef rewards the scuba diver and snorkeller with 40m+ visibility and if the season’s right, the chance to see schooling hammerhead sharks, dogtooth tuna and other pelagic species.

The Gulf of Carpentaria

This warm and shallow expanse of water is bordered by Queensland to the east with the Northern Territory to the west. With over 20 river systems draining into the pristine, mangrove lined shores of East Arnhemland and the Cape York Peninsula, this union creates an incredibly productive region for some of the best fishing in the world.

The dry season lasts from about April until November and is characterized by very dry southeast to east winds, generated by migratory winter high pressure systems to the south. The green season lasts from December to March.

Snorkelling and scuba diving is out of this world where shallow lagoons harbour colourful coral, abundant marine life and even a ship wreck. Take a dive here and you’ll see untouched coral gardens, giant clams and other shellfish.

The fishing here is quite simply is outstanding!

Many species are protected so catch and release programs are enforced. The deep waters surrounding the Rowley Shoals are home to large populations of pelagic species such as sharks, marlin and sailfish, so it’s a good spot for experiencing the thrill of big game fishing.

Scuba Diving Restrictions

• Certain medical conditions and medications may preclude some people from scuba diving.
• Participation is subject to a medical questionnaire completed on board with the tour operator
• Minimum age for scuba diving is 12 years.
• Flying after scuba diving: a wait of 12 hours is recommended after one dive, 18 hour after 2 dives and at least 24 hours after multiple dives, before ascending to an altitude of 300 metres or greater.

Additional Information

• Flying after diving: if only one dive is undertaken then a minimum of 12 hours is recommended before flying. If more than one dive is conducted in the day, a minimum of 18 hours must pass before flying, however 24 hours is recommended.
• The designated Captain of MV-SAV shall be suitably qualified and carry all necessary licenses for a vessel of MV-SAV’s specifications. The client recognises the authority of the Captain in all matters, regarding safety (including service of alcohol), navigation and speed of MV-SAV and associated equipment (tender and water sports equipment). Further, the client recognises the authority of the Captain in reference to anchorages and itinerary alterations due to weather or Force Majeure. Should the client fail to recognise the authority of the Captain, the owner of MV-SAV holds the right to cancel the charter with all outstanding monies to be settled by the client.
• Fuel and carbon levy surcharges may apply. These are payable direct to the tour operator.
• Management reserve the right to cancel or reschedule a tour at any time subject to weather conditions. Tour itineraries may change subject to weather conditions. We recommended you take out travel insurance to cover you for any unforeseen circumstance.
