 Have you ever dreamed of exploring the endless blue, breathing easily and gliding weightless through coral gardens and marine life?

This is your exhilarating chance to bring that dream into reality! The professional diving experts on Magnetic Island, just off the coast of Townsville, will teach you every skill needed to gain your Open Water Certification, and a license to roam the big blue!

This exceptional scuba diving course will take 3 days to complete, and you can either choose to stay in Townsville, or accommodation is available at the stunning Koala Village in Horseshoe Bay; the only resort in Australia with a wildlife park attached!

Both SSI and PADI are globally recognized scuba diving certifications; with the facets of this exciting course much the same.

On day 1 you’ll meet your welcoming instructors and fellow students; you might even make a few new lifelong dive buddy friends!

You’ll likewise go through some theory in a welcoming classroom, and an introduction to your dive equipment.

And during day 2 and 3, you’ll learn your skills and practice techniques in both a custom made swimming pool, and the magical reef shoreline of Magnetic Island with 4 whole ocean dives!

Day One Open Water Certification Dive Course

Now that you’ve chosen to gain a scuba diving license that allows you to roam the coral gardens and marine life domain of the endless blue, it will take a few steps to get there, and each one a riveting journey!

Learning to scuba dive gives you the freedom to explore the ocean with a buddy and less supervision.

And on Day 1, you’ll begin this venture with class theory, and introduction to the equipment that allows you to breathe and glide weightlessly underwater, along with the possibility of new, lifelong friends!

You’ll also be learning in a place of stunning tropical surrounds, with the only dive-purpose built swimming pool on Magnetic Island, and among the dazzling reefs and waters of Magnetic Island!

Choosing SSI or PADI Dive Certification

There is little difference between the globally recognized SSI (Scuba Schools International) and PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors).

Both provide mighty and expert courses in scuba diving knowledge, safety and practices.

And the two organizations use only the most experienced instructors to teach you your diving skills.

PADI have been around a little longer, and though newer, SSI shares the same high standards.

When choosing which dive certification to claim, you might like to know that PADI requires all theory to be done during a class, whereas with SSI, students can to log into their website, register your course hosts, and begin the theory ahead of the dive course on Magnetic Island.

And in regards to a photo ID card for your certification, PADI will send your ID in the mail on course completion, and SSI will direct an immediate email, granting you an e-certification to be downloaded. Both brilliant choices!

Townville and Magnetic Island

Your Open Water Certified scuba diving course takes you to the superb shores of Magnetic Island.

Just a short ferry ride from Townsville, the island is a tropical paradise with dazzling waters and surrounding coral reefs.

You could choose to stay on Magnetic island, with either a short trip to your scuba diving course each morning, or opt for Townsville accommodation and catch the scenic ferry ride over at dawn.

Townsville is a city in Far North Queensland renowned for its laid back charm, country ambience, yet with modern bars, restaurants and nightlife.

Whereas its jewel, Magnetic Island, is on a smaller, but no less enchanting scale.

The island consists of four main coves, and your course takes place at Arcadia, at Alma Bay.

You’ll have an hour off each day for lunch with new new friends, where you can choose to bring your own packed delights, or indulge in delicious meals from the nearby eateries with a stunning ocean view!

Optional Stay at the Koala Village

With the scuba diving license you’ll gain after an Open Water course, you’ll gain a new and exhilarating form of underwater freedom.

Day Two Open Water Certification Dive Course

After the first day spent with your fellow classmates and friendly instructors, you’ll be up on diving techniques, skills, and well on the road to being Open Water Dive Certified!

By this stage, the majority of theory is completed, and you’ll have a new understanding of diving physics, safety practices underwater, and what to expect on a thrilling scuba venture.

The next step is taking your amazing new knowledge to the water!

Don’t forget, if there’s something you don’t understand, your expert instructors are not only there to teach you every facet of diving, but to also ensure the very best experience in all areas!

Day 2 will likewise break for an hour lunch, and again, you can opt to bring your own yummy personalised lunch, or grab some fish and chips or a sumptuous sandwich from any of the Arcadia cafes!

Everybody in the Pool

Time to get wet! Your outstanding Open Water Scuba Diving course boasts Magnetic Island’s only purpose-built swimming pool to gain underwater skills.

This course is designed to have you feeling confident and comfortable in the water with diving equipment before the big ocean adventures ahead.

The swimming pool is likewise where you’ll become familiar with wearing your weight-belt and tanks, and breathing easily with your regulator.

Diving Skills and Techniques

Five Point Descent. Giant Stride. Fin Pivot. These may sound like strange terminologies right now, but you’ll be performing all these features like a professional scuba diver in no time!

Once you’re comfortable in the water, you’ll go over techniques such as clearing your mask and regulator, buoyancy control, and assembling of scuba equipment.

If it sounds complicated, don’t fret, every skill will be gone through with you point by point, with an explanation of the hows and whys.

You’ll also learn important hand signals for both safety, and to draw attention when a sea-turtle is meandering by!

First Ocean Dive on the Great Barrier Reef

From the custom made swimming pool, to the crystal shores of Magnetic Island’s Alma Bay.

After you’ve gained confidence and and understanding in the water, it will be time to try out all your new, evolved scuba diving skills in your very first ocean dive of the course!

From your dive course base in Arcadia, you’ll head to the sand and submerge in a beach dive.

You’ll have already gotten a feel for wearing your dive equipment in the water, and this first dive will put it into perspective and practice.

Your first ocean dive at Alma Bay is a great way to become used to the sights and feeling of the big blue.

And by your second ocean dive today, you’ll get a sense of how beautiful and mighty the undersea world truly is, and how to explore it with your new talented capacity as you ascend, clear your mask and regulator, practice buoyancy, and prepare for the lifetime of adventure this certification will bring!

Day Three Open Water Certification Dive Course

By this stage of the learn to scuba dive course, you will have participated in 2 ocean dives and practiced the majority of your new found aquatic education.

You may already feel like a practiced expert in many areas!

Day 3 is all about re-capping those skills, and enhancing any that felt a little mysterious on Day 2.

As your equipment now feels at one with you, and your new knowledge becomes instinct, you’ll begin to relax into your new found talent and truly see what’s around you.

Alma Bay, with its balmy waters and crystal-clear conditions, is a shallow and perfect experience for Open Water students.

It’s also a magical reef where you’re likely to see a spotted lagoon sting-ray drifting by!

And when exploring the Moltke Shipwreck at Geoffrey Bay, you’ll find a new depth of adoration for certified diving while swimming among the rays, crayfish, sea-stars and absolute rainbow of reef fish!

Become a Certified Diver on the Great Barrier Reef

On the exciting final and day of your learn to scuba dive course, you may find you’ve had such an amazing journey that you won’t want to leave!

What could be better than making new friends on a tropical island, diving the glimmering waters of the Great Barier Reef, and gaining a license to do it all over the world?

The majority of your learn to dive skills will have been completed on Day 2, with just a few more techniques to go through on Day 3, yet they’ll be plenty of time to relax and enjoy the magical sights on 2 more oceanic dives!

Once you’ve experienced the exhilaration of a mastered scuba adventure, along with viewing mesmerising marine life, they’ll be one last spot of theory to go.

On certification, your photos are supplied and completion signed off.

With a Padi Open Water, your photo ID card will arrive in the mail soon after, and when choosing SSI, you’ll receive your e-certification by email directly.

Scuba Diving Restrictions

  • Certain medical conditions and medications may preclude some people from scuba diving.
  • Participation is subject to a medical questionnaire completed on board with the tour operator
  • Minimum age for scuba diving is 12 years.
  • Flying after scuba diving: A wait of 12 hours is recommended but preferably 24 hours, if doing multiple dives, before ascending to an altitude of 300 metres or greater.
