Departing on a charter flight in the morning from Cairns you arrive in the ancient mysterious country of Papua New Guinea to meet our small luxury cruise ships to begin a 12 day adventure of exploration, colour and excitement in a land that has the largest tract of rainforest outside the Amazon.

Our 2 unique Cairns to Papua New Guinea, Madang to Cairns boat cruises begin with a charter flight departure from Cairns (additional expense) in November 2019.

Our bespoke cruising itinerary was specifically created for discerning guests who are interested in exploring the more remote, mysterious places that are not often seen by other tour groups or the bigger commercial cruise ship companies.

Cruise Ship Itinerary

2019: Charter Flight from Cairns (additional extra): 11am. Embark: Madang at 3pm. Disembark: Cairns at 8am

Day 1 Cairns to Madang

Guests join our 11am charter flight from Cairns to Madang to embark our small luxury cruise ships at 3.00pm. Guests can spend the afternoon settling into their cabin accommodation and meeting other passengers on the cruise.

Later on the boats expedition crew will talk about the next 12 nights of adventure and the many experiences you will enjoy as well as answer all of your questions. 

Day 2 Sepik River & Sepik Village

Our cruise ship will arrive at the Sepik at first light, and an early morning rise will reward you with stunning views. Our first stop will be at the village of Bien, where the locals will greet you in dugout canoes and entertain you with dancing performances.

The Sepik market, famous for its masks and carvings, will be also provide you with the opportunity for souvenir shopping.

Day 3 Manam Volcano & Bagabag Island

The Manam volcano, known locally as Manam Motu, is one of Papua New Guinea’s most active volcanoes.

As the ship sits close to the leeward side of the island, enjoy a drink while the sun sets.

You may see smoke rising from the volcano. A visit to Bagabag Island offers the chance to snorkel, dive, or visit Bagabag Island.

Day 4 Dregerhafen & Tuam Island

At the beautiful anchorage of Dregerhafen, you will enjoy a high-spirited Papua New Guinea welcome, and explore the market which is famous for Tami bowls and timber paddles.

There are many WWII artifacts in this area. Enjoy more traditional dancing at Tuam Island, as well as snorkeling off the beach.

Day 5 Lababia & Fly Islands

In the morning, during a relaxing visit to the village, you can enjoy singing and dancing performances or join a local guide around the village.

Board an outrigger to explore up the local river, and experience snorkelling or diving at the Biangatu Island reef in the Fly Islands.

Day 6 Morobe Harbour

Enter Morobe Harbour early in the morning and cruise in the Xplorer to view the stunning forest from the Mou River.

Receive an Oro Province welcome and enjoy exploring the village with local guides. At high tide you may be able to travel into a stunning bay to another village.

Day 7 Buna & Sanananda

We land at Buna beach, home to some of the toughest fighting in the Pacific campaign.

We will visit the areas where Allied forces clashed with Japanese forces In Sanananda, see the local monuments and war museum. This museum is located at the far end of the Kokoda Track.

Day 8 Maclaren Harbour & Tufi Fjords

Arrive in MacLaren Harbour and enter the Tufi Fjord where local outriggers will be waiting to paddle you up the creek under the rainforest canopy.

Watch and learn the local way of life, while the village elders perform a traditional sing sing wearing their feather head-dresses.

Enjoy snorkelling or diving on the reef, or kayak the steep edges of nearby fjords.

Day 9 Trobriands

Historically known as the ‘islands of love’, the Trobiands offer a glimpse of traditional cultures largely unspoiled by outside influence.

Be greeted at the small island Kuiawa with a Trobiand welcome.

The island of Kitava is famous for its yam houses. Visit local markets or enjoy water activities.

Day 10 Dei Dei Springs & Dobu Island

Hear the mythical and spiritual tales of the Dei Dei hot water and mud springs.

Learn the history of the Kula Ring and the role of Dobu Island in the north and south Kula trade routes. Snorkel the bubbling springs reef

Day 11 Alotau

Wake up to the scenery of the China Strait as we approach Alotau.

Our experienced guest lecturers will interpret the traditional welcome dances prior to leading us on a tour of historic Alotau and a cruise of Milne Bay.

Day 12 Cruise the Great Barrier Reef to Cairns

Cruise across the Great Barrier Reef over the Coral Sea, enjoy presentations by our guest lecturers including an expedition recap.

This evening join your fellow travellers for the Captain’s farewell drinks.

Day 13 Arrive in Cairns

Disembark in Cairns at 8am

Scuba Diving Restrictions

  • Certain medical conditions and medications may preclude some people from scuba diving.
  • Participation is subject to a medical questionnaire completed on board with the tour operator
  • Minimum age for scuba diving is 12 years.
  • Flying after scuba diving: A wait of 12 hours is recommended but preferably 24 hours, if doing multiple dives, before ascending to an altitude of 300 metres or greater.

  • The carrier will endeavour to follow the Cruise itinerary as described in the brochure and the passenger accepts that the carrier has the right to vary the itinerary or cancel the Cruise if the carrier considers that this is necessary as a result of some Unexpected Event or prevailing inclement weather conditions and the passenger accepts that the passenger will not be entitled to any compensation or a refund of the fare paid should this occur except as is provided for in these Cruise Ticket Conditions.
  • All baggage brought on board the Ship by a passenger remains in the possession and control of the passenger during the Cruise and must be stored and kept in the cabin allocated to the passenger.
  • Please check with your nearest Papua New Guinea consulate or embassy regarding documentation required for travel to these countries. It is the passengers responsibility to ensure they have all necessary paperwork permitting travel to these countries.
  • All purchases onboard will be charged to your room account and will need to be settled prior to disembarking. Payment can be made with Cash, Credit Card or Australian Dollars Travellers cheque. It is recommended guests bring a small supply of PNG Kina, Solomon Island Dollars, Vanuatu Vatu and Pacific Franc for purchases whilst ashore.
  • It is recommended that all passengers purchase appropriate travel insurance prior to departure. Please ensure you are covered for remote area evacuation.

Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Coral Expeditions do not provide services of entertainment, supervision or care of children. Our Papua New Guinea itineraries are quite adventurous. We recommend children aged above 12 years of age will enjoy the challenge and experience the most.

All cancellations must be in writing. Please note that all cancellations will incur an administration fee. Please see our terms and conditions  for details prior to booking.

  • Notification of cancellation must be received in writing. At the time we receive your cancellation the following penalties will apply:
  • More than 90 days prior to departure - forfeit the 20% non-refundable deposit
  • 30 - 89 days prior to departure - forfeit 50% of the relevant fare
  • No-show to 29 days prior to departure - forfeit 100% of the relevant fare
  • Coral Expeditions considers a date and/or name change to be a cancellation of the original booking and will enforce relevant cancellation fees.
  • A $200 per person fee will be charged for any amendments not requiring a date change, name change or cancellation after booking is confirmed.
  • We strongly recommend that all passengers purchase cruise cancellation and interruption insurance as protection against any circumstance which may force you to cancel or leave a cruise while in progress. Given the remote nature of some of the locations visited during the expedition, we recommend that you include Remote Area Evacuation coverage within your policy. Cancellation fees will not be waived for any reason.
  • Passengers do not have the right to transfer their rights and obligations under these Cruise Ticket Conditions. The fare paid shall not be refundable except as permitted in these Cruise Ticket Conditions and the carrier will not be liable to make any refund to the passenger if the passenger fails to embark on the Ship for the Cruise.
  • Full payment due 30 days prior to travel
