Premium small-group scuba diving from Port Douglas aboard Independence. Only 12 guests, 2 guided dives with marine biologists on exclusive Low Use Reefs. Includes gourmet lunch, onboard facilities and snorkelling option.
Step aboard Independence, a purpose-built dive vessel carrying just 12 guests, and set out toward exclusive Low Use Reefs on the Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas. These secluded dive sites are only accessible to operators with limited passenger numbers, allowing you to experience the reef in its most vibrant condition away from crowded locations.
Your day includes two premium scuba dives accompanied by accredited marine biologists who share detailed reef knowledge throughout each dive. This expert guidance enhances your underwater experience with insight into marine ecosystems, coral formations, and species behaviour.
Snorkellers and freedivers are welcome to join the tour; however, they will explore unguided while divers receive structured supervision.
Between dives, relax on the shaded back deck—designed as a fully integrated wet zone where gear setup, dining, and downtime flow seamlessly without the need to change areas. Facilities include freshwater showers, bathrooms, and open seating, creating a smooth progression between dive preparation and relaxation.
Morning and afternoon tea are provided on board, alongside a gourmet deli roll or wrap for lunch. Designed for comfort and practical dive operations, the 16-metre vessel offers ample space to unwind between underwater sessions.
We also offer a full day Great Barrier Reef trip dedicated to Intro Divers and Snorkellers.

What certification do I need to join this scuba tour?
This tour is for certified divers only. Minimum certification is Junior Open Water (age 10+) or Open Water. You’ll complete a PADI Diver Medical Questionnaire; some conditions may require doctor’s clearance. Introductory dives, or first time dives, are not offered on Independence (but they are available on our
How many guests are there on Port Douglas’ best scuba diving tour and what’s the guide ratio?
ABC Reef Safaris takes a maximum of just 12 guests on their scuba diving tours, ensuring personal care and attention for all guests. Our industry-leading guide-to-diver ratio is 1:5. This ensures relaxed briefings, careful site choices and in-water support that lets you focus on great diving, not crowds.
How deep are the dives and how long are bottom times?
The depth of your dives will be guided by your certification level, but all dive sites are suitable for those with Open Water certification and above. Unlike most other Port Douglas dive boats, bottom time is limited only by your air consumption and can be up to 90 minutes per dive. Exact dive times vary by site, experience and environmental factors.
Do you allow freediving, and can I mix freediving with scuba diving on the same day?
Freedivers are welcome and may use weight belts (buddy rules apply). Freediving is unguided. For safety, we do not allow guests to mix freediving and scuba diving on the same day. As a conservative guide, leave 12 to 18 hours after freediving before scuba diving (longer after repetitive sessions).
Can my snorkelling partner come on this Port Douglas dive trip?
Yes. Snorkelling partners of scuba divers and freedivers are welcome aboard this Port Douglas dive trip, and will enjoy the same premium vessel experience including Marine Biologist reef talks and presentations. Small numbers and carefully chosen sites mean clear water, vibrant coral and relaxed surface intervals for non-divers to enjoy. Please note that snorkelling is unguided on this trip (divers are guided).
How long should I wait before flying after diving?
Follow a conservative surface interval. Current guidance: minimum 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive, 18 hours after multiple dives. Many divers choose 24 hours for added margin, especially after repetitive days. Avoid going to altitude until your recommended interval has safely elapsed.
