While the Great Barrier Reef is one of the world’s best known places to scuba dive, Finch Hatton Gorge in Mackay is said to be the only place in the world where you can scuba dive with the platypus.
In fact it is the only company in the world to offer scuba diving tours in rainforest waters where Platypus live!
This truly is a unique Australian tour for the whole family to enjoy.
First-time or experienced divers are welcome, and group sizes are small to ensure an authentic, underwater experience is enjoyed by all.
All scuba divers will need to fill out a medical questionairre to ensure your safety and the safety of others underwater.
If you wish, you may just snorkel in the rainforest waters and join our educational rainforest scuba and platypus tour.
There is such a huge array of other fascinating underwater native Australian animals that you may have never seen or heard of before.
Book our rainforest scuba platypus tour in advance as during peak season we are normally booked out very early on our tours.
And just remember platypus are very shy creatures so we cannot guarantee you will see them but we certainly give it the best chance.
The last thing you want to worry about when on your holiday is carrying around bulky equipment, so everything is provided for a complete dive.
You will spend some time prior to the tour getting fitted with appropriate wet suits, snorkels, fins and scuba tanks.
Enjoy a 30-minute education session, as well as a 15-minute ‘show-and-tell’ about the aquatic life that can be found inside the billabong, including fish, turtles, eel-tailed catfish, eels, shrimp and, of course, the platypus.
Platypus are shy creatures that don’t abide by any particular pattern, so the tour guide says when they are seen, it’s a very special moment.
Equipment is gathered, wet suits are on and, now you are armed with a little extra information, you will discover first-hand the wonders of the rainforest.
Enjoy spectacular scenic views of the cane fields and rainforest as you take the 15-minute drive to the crystal-clear waters of Finch Hatton Gorge.
You will make your way to the billabong and practice breathing techniques.
First-timescuba divers will be made to feel calm and safe in and out of the water.
The beauty of diving within rainforest waters is the added comfort of safety for divers who may not be confident swimmers.
With the billabong being a shallow pool of water, you need not stress if you find yourself a little flustered underwater.
Simply stand up.
There’s no rushing on this dive tour. Spend an enjoyable 45 minutes to one hour crawling slowly across the billabong floor.
Some of the aquatic life will be curious and others will require patience so move slow.
Take in the underwater life and feel free to stop and ask questions.
While it’s not guaranteed you will always see a platypus, the dive offers exciting and spectacular underwater experiences.
When the dive is over, you’ll feel refreshed and maybe a little tired after such an exciting experience in the Finch Hatton Gorge waters.
Make your way back to the dive shop for a warm cup of tea or coffee and to change into dry clothes.
