Itinerary

Take the tour, taste the action, at the award-winning Sarina Sugar Shed

Education and fun for all ages

The Sarina Sugar Shed is an educational and exciting tour for all ages.

The tour begins with an educational video on the history of cane farming in Australia and the Sarina region. Learn why it is such an important industry and the benefits it has made to Australia’s economy. Each tour can be tailored to suit audiences and children will enjoy learning about the history and process of growing, harvesting and crushing sugar cane.

 Enjoy a walking tour

The guide will take you on a short walking tour to see old farming and cane harvesting equipment, with views of the region’s sugar cane fields and large working mill in the background.

Take turns getting a photo as a cane cutter and take a closer look at how innovative farming equipment has become.

Discover what happens inside a sugar mill

Inside the Sarina Sugar Shed, you will watch the entire process unfold before your eyes as the cane is crushed and processed inside the miniature mill. Each machine is labelled clearly and the guide will explain the function of each machine, with some quirky facts thrown in for good measure.

Suck on a freshly cut sugar cane stalk straight from the paddock, or try the rich sticky molasses, which can then be turned into crystallised forms of sugar.

Taste testing for young and old

You will then get the chance to taste the products created by the Sarina Sugar Shed at the end of the tour. The kids will love the fairy floss (which is made in front of them) and adults can enjoy taste testing the liqueurs, schnapps, vodka, ginger beer and Rum.

Award-winning Sugar Shed Rum and gourmet products

A real paddock-to-plate experience, the Sarina Sugar Shed brew and distill the award-winning Sugar Shed Rum on site from the cane they grow, crush and turn into syrup.

After the tour, explore the gift shop where you can purchase delicious and top-quality gourmet chutneys, sauces, relishes and liqueurs, or take home some sweet treats like fudge, shortbread and puddings.

Commencing in June 2017 is the ‘on-farm’ tours where you can meet local farmers and see exactly how the cane is grown and harvested. Choose either the Sarina Sugar Shed Tour or the Farm Tour, or combine the two.
