Start your day at a time suited to you; select which iconic experience you’d like to travel aboard first, either the Kuranda Train & Scenic Railway or the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway; and choose how much time you’d like to spend exploring Kuranda.

Skip the queue tickets, pre-allocated Kuranda Scenic train carriage seating, express check in Skyrail Rainforest Gondola and discounts for Kuranda attractions and upgrade options, multi lingual tours.

A flexible half day or full day Kuranda tour.

If you decide to travel aboard the Skyrail first, you’ll be taken to the Smithfield Terminal. Silently gliding over rainforest canopy in your gondola, you’ll have plenty of photo and selfie opportunities as you take in spectacular views of the Great Barrier Reef, Barron River, and surrounding tropical landscape.

Once at the quaint village of Kuranda, explore at your leisure. Venture along one of the many walking tracks; visit the daily Heritage Markets, where you’ll find woodwork, handmade leather goods, jewellery, and more; grab a bite to eat at one of the many cafés and restaurants; or cuddle a koala at the Kuranda Koala Gardens.

Your return-leg home aboard the Kuranda Train will wind through tunnels, past thick rainforest, and waterfalls tumbling into deep ravines. From Freshwater Train Station, you’ll be transferred back to your accommodation.

Your Kuranda Tour Begins

You’ll start your Kuranda tour with a pick-up in a coach from your Cairns or Northern Beaches accommodation.

The pick-up time all depends whether you’d like to start your day as early as 7am, or as late as 1.15pm for a half day or full day Kuranda tour.

Keep in mind this will affect how much time you’re able to spend in Kuranda, which ranges from no time at all, to an hour, two, three, and so on, to the maximum amount of time of five hours.

You’ll also be able to decide which sequence of the iconic Cairns’ experiences you’d like to hop aboard for your journey to Kuranda: the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, or the Kuranda Scenic Railway.

You would have decided all this before boarding the coach, so for now sit back in your reclining, leather seat as your knowledgeable driver provides an overview of what you can expect from this iconic  Cairns day tour.

Kuranda Train and Scenic Railway

If you selected to travel aboard the Kuranda Train and Scenic Railway for the first leg of your journey, your coach transfer will deliver you to Freshwater Station.

It’s here you’ll board your pre-assigned carriage of the historic Kuranda Train and Scenic Rail.

As you climb to Kuranda the ‘Village in the Rainforest’, located 330m above sea level, you’ll be winding through tunnels, across bridges, past thick rainforest, and waterfalls tumbling into deep ravines.

As you pass breathtaking views you’ll understand how lives were lost during the construction of this magnificent railway line in the late 1800s.

It’s an incredible journey, made even more so by the informative audio commentary, which brings the stories of this historic railway to life.

The journey takes approximately 90 minutes, including a stop along the way at the Barron Falls lookout for about 10 minutes.

Upgrade to Gold Class on the Kuranda Train (optional)

Upgrade to Gold Class aboard the Kuranda Train and Scenic Railway where you’ll be treated to dedicated host service, lounge-style chairs, and delectable delights from the Tablelands and Queensland such as Gallo Dairyland cheese, Skybury coffee, Wondaree macadamias, Sirromet Wines, Great Northern lager, and more.

The times available for the Gold Class Carriage upgrade option are:

9.50am and 3.30pm trains

Kuranda The Village in the Rainforest

Once you’ve arrived at Kuranda, explore the village and markets at your own leisure.

The thriving restaurant and café scene means there are plenty of options for a bite to eat, including Frogs Restaurant, located at the Heritage Markets.

The daily, all-weather markets are a testament to the ingrained arts culture of the village.  You’ll find plenty of local arts and craft, souvenirs, and more.

Or explore one of the many walking trails surrounding the village, suitable for every age and fitness level.

Go on a riverside stroll, further into the rainforest, or to one of the lookouts.

Or explore one of the top wildlife attractions, including Birdworld, Australia’s largest butterfly sanctuary, and the Kuranda Koala Gardens.

Bonus discount vouchers are provided as part of the Kuranda Boarding Pass; however, the price of final entry is at your own expense.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

For the return trip home, aboard the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway gondola, you’ll glide over rainforest canopy while enjoying spectacular panoramic views of the Coral Sea and waterfalls.

Take the opportunity to alight at the two rainforest stations. The first is Barron Falls Station where you’ll have access to the CSIRO Rainforest Interpretation Centre and the second is Red Peak Station, where you can enjoy a complimentary ranger-guided tour.

Once you’ve arrived at Smithfield Terminal, your coach will be waiting to return you to your accommodation.

Upgrade to Diamond View Gondola (optional)

Upgrade to the Skyrail Diamond View gondola if your game, where, in addition to spectacular panoramic views, you’ll have the unique experience of being able to see through the glass perspex floor of the carriage.

Please note there is limited availability for this option, so best to enquire upon booking.

Loved the Skyrail going up and the train coming back down and of course Kuranda Village in between. Went to see the birds and koalas , strolled around the market and enjoyed the atmosphere. In Skyrail ride met two lovely guys from Sydney . One of them was afraid of heights so i told him about the unfortunate incident at Arthur's Seat in Victoria where the suspension collapsed. I think that made their day, they suggested that I also visit Rotorua in N.Z. as they also have a lovely gondola ride. Shall put that on the 'to do' list.

Response From Barrier Reef Australia

Thank you for taking the time to write a review! I am happy to hear you had a fantastic time on the Kuranda Scenic Rail and Skyrail and spending time up in Kuranda, the village in the rainforest. If you are ever back in Far North Queensland we would be happy to give you more tips!

We found the train trip up and the sky rail back quite interesting. We thoroughly enjoyed the river cruise at Kuranda. We were not that interested in the shops and found the area quite commercialised. It took some time to get back down by sky rail as there were so many people waiting. The transport services were very efficient.

Response From Barrier Reef Australia

Thanks for your feedback Jennifer. The Kuranda Day tour is one of the most popular tours on offer in Cairns. We are pleased you took the time to enjoy the river cruise and some of the lesser known sights of Kuranda.

A must do activity for all visitors to Tropical North Queensland. Definitely recommend the Diamond upgrade Gondola, it was spectacular (and shorter queues!). The train trip back we upgraded to First Class and was a very unique experience and worth the indulgence. We had a fantastic day.

Response From Barrier Reef Australia

Thanks for your feedback Shirley. The Kuranda Scenic Rail and Skyrail combo is certainly up there on the list of must do activities for visitors to Cairns and Port Douglas. We are pleased you enjoyed the Gold Class service and The Tour Specialists look forward to being a part of your next visit to our region.
