A full day Great Barrier Reef pontoon experience at Hardy Reef featuring snorkelling, scuba diving, semi-submersible submarine tours, underwater observatory access and optional scenic helicopter flights, departing from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Daydream Island.

This Whitsundays Great Barrier Reef pontoon tour travels to Reefworld, a large floating multi-activity platform permanently moored at Hardy Reef. It is the only pontoon-based reef experience in the Whitsundays offering such a wide range of activities in one location, making it one of the most versatile reef tours for families, non-swimmers and first-time visitors.

This pontoon tour forms part of Barrier Reef Australia’s Whitsundays Great Barrier Reef tour collection, curated for travellers seeking structured reef access, multi-activity options and safe participation for mixed abilities.

Guests travel by fast catamaran through the Whitsunday Passage to Hardy Reef, where they spend approximately four hours exploring the reef above and below the water. Activities include snorkelling, optional scuba diving, a semi-submersible submarine tour, time in the underwater observatory and optional scenic helicopter flights over iconic reef formations.

What to expect

Unlike fast outer-reef snorkelling boats or single-activity dive trips, Reefworld provides a fixed base at Hardy Reef, allowing guests to combine snorkelling, submarine viewing, observatory access, diving and scenic flights in one location without time pressure.

This is a full-day Whitsundays reef experience designed to suit a wide range of travellers. After departing the mainland or island, the catamaran cruises through the Whitsunday Islands before reaching Hardy Reef, located on the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef system.

Once at Reefworld, guests are free to structure their time between activities rather than following a fixed schedule. You may choose to snorkel, relax on the sundeck, explore the underwater observatory, take a submarine tour or upgrade to a scuba dive or helicopter flight. Crew and marine staff are on hand throughout the day to assist, supervise and provide educational commentary.

Features and highlights

Cruise to Hardy Reef

The day begins with a morning cruise through the Whitsunday Passage, offering views of forested islands and turquoise water. Onboard commentary introduces the reef ecosystem and outlines the activities available once you arrive at Reefworld.

Snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef

Snorkelling takes place in clearly marked, roped-off areas adjacent to the pontoon, allowing easy access to coral gardens and reef walls. Equipment fitting and flotation devices are provided, and crew members are available to assist first-time snorkellers.

Marine life commonly seen includes reef fish, coral formations, giant clams, sea turtles and, in cooler months, passing rays, dolphins and whales.

Semi-submersible submarine tour

The semi-submersible submarine allows guests to view the reef without entering the water. Large viewing windows provide close-up views of coral and marine life, with guided commentary explaining reef structures and species behaviour.

This activity is particularly popular with non-swimmers, families with young children and guests seeking a dry reef experience.

Underwater observatory

The underwater observatory provides a seated, sheltered viewing area beneath the waterline, where guests can watch snorkellers and marine life move past the glass panels.

Optional snorkelling safari

Guided snorkelling safaris are available as an upgrade and are led by experienced marine naturalists. These small-group sessions focus on reef interpretation, marine behaviour and coral ecology, while offering additional support for less confident swimmers.

Optional introductory scuba dive

Introductory scuba dives are available for guests with no prior diving experience. A qualified instructor provides full training and supervision before guiding divers on a shallow reef dive of approximately 30 minutes.

Optional certified scuba diving

Certified divers may choose deeper dives exploring reef walls, bommies and coral formations. Dive sites are selected on the day based on conditions.

Optional scenic helicopter flight

Scenic helicopter flights depart directly from the pontoon and provide aerial views of the Great Barrier Reef, including iconic formations such as Heart Reef and surrounding reef systems.

Cruise-and-fly or fly-and-cruise combinations are available, allowing guests to return by helicopter to the mainland or islands.

Helicopter flights from Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island must be pre-booked in advance due to limited seat capacity and are subject to weight and weather conditions.

Available upgrades

• Introductory scuba dives
• Certified scuba dives
• Scenic helicopter flights
• Guided snorkelling safari
• Souvenir photos
• Cruise-and-fly or fly-and-cruise return options
• Licensed bar purchases
